The American College of Sports Medicine released its annual survey this week, stating that resistance training using your own body weight will take center stage in the fitness scene.

?Body weight exercises are a proven way to get and stay fit,? said survey author Dr. Walt Thompson of Georgia State University. ?In a time when many people are concerned with cutting expenses, body weight exercises are a great way to feel great and look toned without a big financial investment.?

The survey involved interviewing nearly 3,350 health and fitness professionals worldwide.

The top ten fitness trends predicted for 2013 are as follows:

1. Educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals ? The need for experienced and certified fitness professionals is on the rise. In the US for example, jobs for fitness workers are expected to rise much faster than the average for all other occupations, according to the US Labor Department.

2. Strength training ? In the no. 2 slot for the second year in a row, strength training will be a strong trend again for men, women, kids and seniors.

3. Body weight training ? A newcomer to the chart this year, body weight training uses minimal equipment and includes push-ups and pull-ups.

4. Children and obesity ? Another major trend will be exercise programs geared to kids struggling with weight issues. Schools are joining with commercial and community-focused exercise programs to get kids moving and combat soaring obesity rates.

5. Exercise and weight loss ? Also a popular trend, people continue to exercise to help lose weight.

6. Fitness programs for older adults ? Fitness programs targeted to seniors continue to grow in popularity.

7. Personal training ? More attention will be paid to certification of personal trainers and using their expertise in community-based programs, commercial settings, corporate wellness programs and medical fitness programs.

8. Functional fitness ? Functional fitness uses strength training to improve balance, coordination and endurance in order to participate in daily activities without any stress.

9. Core training ? Always a popular trend, core training stresses strength and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of the abdomen, thorax and back.

10. Group personal training ? For money-conscious fitness buffs, group personal training allows personalized fitness without breaking the bank.
