Power from cellphone towers keeps vaccines cool

Surplus electricity from cellphone towers can run fridges to chill vital drugs in parts of the world where the main power supply is unreliable

STAFF at Morganster Hospital, which serves a remote community in Zimbabwe's Masvingo province, used to sleep fitfully. If the power failed and a back-up generator was offline - common problems in the impoverished nation - they would have to jump out of bed and drive for 26 kilometres to stash their stock of life-saving vaccines in a fridge in the provincial capital.

But those days are over, thanks to a pilot project that is testing a simple idea floated in the pages of New Scientist. In that article, infectious disease specialist Harvey Rubin of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Alice Conant, then a student at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, suggested using surplus power from cellphone towers to run the refrigerators needed to keep perishable vaccines cool (18 September 2010, p 24).

Their idea is now being tried out at 10 church-run hospitals across Zimbabwe, with the backing of Econet Wireless, a cellphone provider based in Johannesburg, South Africa. After Bernard Fernandes, Econet's chief technology officer, heard Rubin give a presentation in Mombasa, Kenya, in March 2011, he went straight to Econet's chairman, Strive Masiyiwa, with a proposal. "He said to me: 'Get on with it'," Fernandes says.

Cellphones have overtaken landlines in developing countries. To keep their towers working reliably in areas where the power often fails, or the masts are off the grid, cellphone firms have installed generators, and sometimes solar panels. Surplus power can then be used to chill vaccines, maintaining the cold chain, the weakest link in efforts to immunise children against diseases like polio, measles and diphtheria.

To be sure that power glitches wouldn't cause problems, Fernandes chose fridges by True Energy of Tywyn, UK, that can keep cool for 10 days without power, even in temperatures above 40 ?C. The fridges have sensors to monitor temperature both inside and out, and to detect when the door is opened. This data is relayed back via the cellphone network, allowing Econet and its partners to know immediately if anything goes wrong. The fridges are either housed in a shelter beneath the cellphone tower, or in the hospital if it is nearby.

Several other projects are in the planning stages. In India, Rubin's non-profit organisation, Energize the Chain, is talking to the Vodafone Foundation and the Karuna Trust, which is known for its work in providing healthcare to the "untouchable" Dalit caste. This initiative would include a controlled experiment to confirm if sites powered by cellphone towers have less vaccine spoilage. This is easy to check because vials of vaccine can be fitted with labels that darken on exposure to heat. Meanwhile in Kenya, Energize the Chain hopes to launch a pilot project involving 10 or more sites, with the backing of both the Kenyan and US governments.

Anthony Battersby, a consultant based near Bath, UK, who conducted a feasibility study for the Kenyan project, worries that high-tech fridges might fail, and so has proposed making ice at the cellphone towers instead, then moving it to coolers in clinics.

Rubin says he doesn't mind which technology is used, as long as vaccines are kept cool and more children get immunised. "What's remarkable is the rapidity with which the idea has been picked up," he says.

94% Marley

All Critics (89) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (83) | Rotten (5)

Marley is highly watchable, finely crafted legacy preservation - and it's either a white-washed sham or awesomely shaded.

It wants to show us the man behind the famous dreads, beatific smile and durable songs of love, hope and longing. In this task it succeeds admirably.

Sprinkled with riffs, concert footage and home videos, the family-authorized documentary does what the artist usually did: When in doubt, return to the beat.

Macdonald supplies some interesting and novel details about the musician's life and art, though the movie's narrative arc and documentary methods are totally predictable.

Bob Marley wrote the same song about 8,000 times, and the documentary "Marley" makes sure to include each version.

This is a life story worth telling, and "Marley" does it much justice. Marley may or may not have been perfect, but he was certainly fascinating.

Bob Marley's short but amazing life

Similarly, with 'Marley,' Macdonald provides some much needed context to the songs that have sold millions of copies throughout the world.

It is the work of a man with opinions, based on endless questioning and research.

Kevin Macdonald's "Marley" is worth sticking with, and not just for diehard fans who had "Get Up, Stand Up" emanating from their dorm room speakers all through college.

Bob Marley fanatics are going to treat this film like the Holy Bible.

Will get you up to speed regarding all things Marley.

For a movie this long, it's too bad there isn't more footage of Marley in performance, joyously bringing music to the world.

...likely as close as we'll ever come to a definitive film biography of this gnomic figure.

Macdonald effectively lets the talking heads and the music explain the longevity of Marley's appeal.

Recounts a short life that seemed to straddle worlds and eras, and perhaps the definitive portrait will never be filmed or written. Until it is, though, there's always the music.

A truly human portrait of an extraordinary life.

Marley is a terrific documentary. It goes beyond one figure, and captures the essence of life itself. The film is as infectious and spiritual as one of his songs.

Good documentaries make us want to know more about their subject. But great ones like Marley don't need to.

It's certainly comprehensive, even if -- at two and a half hours long -- not exactly concise.

If you'd asked me a month ago how Marley had died, I might have cluelessly suggested a drug overdose.

Chronicles the life and times of the first musical superstar from the third world to gain a global audience, with the reggae singer's posthumous Legend album selling some 25 million copies.

Survey & Infographic: Are Small Businesses Ready for Mobile ...

Survey and Infographic Are Small Businesses Ready for Mobile Marketing feature1 Survey & Infographic: Are Small Businesses Ready for Mobile Marketing? To kick off small businesses month, the folks over at Web.com produced a survey and infographic on how small businesses are leveraging the mobile channel. ?Among the many stats, it was revealed that 84% of small businesses?currently?using mobile marketing have seen a sizable increase in new business.

The company surveyed 500 small business owners with under 100 employees and found?that while 69% of small businesses consider mobile marketing crucial to their growth in the next five years, a majority of them are yet to fully leverage the medium.

?With more and more consumers specifically searching for local businesses on their mobile devices, it is imperative that small businesses invest in a mobile presence,? said David Brown, chairman and chief executive officer of Web.com. ?Having a mobile presence can be a huge competitive advantage for small businesses trying to attract local customers by instantly introducing a potential customer to their business? products and services in a mobile-enhanced way.?

Among the findings, the survey also revealed that . . .

  1. U.S. Small Businesses Maintain Good Web-Presence But Still Lack Mobile Presence: While 60% of small businesses surveyed have a website, only 26% have a mobile-friendly website (same layout/content as standard site adjusted to suit your smartphone screen) while an even smaller percentage (14% of small business owners have a stand-alone mobile website (content/layout designed specifically for mobile purposes).
  2. 84% of Small Businesses Currently with Mobile Presence See Increase in New Business Activity: Out of the 500 small business owners surveyed, 14% have a stand-alone mobile website, of which 84% indicated that they have seen an increase in new business activity due to their mobile marketing efforts. This alone serves as validation to make the move into mobile for the majority of small businesses that are skeptical to invest in mobile efforts.
  3. While Mobile Search Becomes Mainstream, Small Businesses Still Not Ready to be Found Via Smartphones: There is a large gap between the rapidly increasing mobile search volumes and the majority of small businesses lagging behind in mobile search strategy. Over 61% of small businesses currently do not have a mobile search strategy and are missing out on consumers trying to find them via a smartphone device.
  4. Biggest Hurdle to Embrace Mobile is Limited Time and Resources: It?s not surprising that time and resource limitations prevent small businesses from entertaining new solutions to market themselves. The survey revealed that 64% of small business owners are also acting as their one-person marketing team. This puts pressure on the small business owner to wear multiple hats and find the time to build a mobile presence besides running other aspects of their business.
  5. 64% of Small Businesses Will Spend More on Mobile Marketing This Year ? 2012 might be the year when mobile-savvy small businesses increase their spend on mobile marketing initiatives. 64% of small business owners surveyed expressed an intention to increase their mobile investments this year, with only 33% indicating that their mobile spend this year will remain the same as last year.

The full survey results can be downloaded here, and Web.com produced the following infographic using the results:

Food writer opens cooking school to share secrets

It was with much anticipation and some trepidation that I met Robert Carrier for lunch recently. Food personalities have been invading Toronto in droves, but it is rare that one has the chance to meet a real cooking superstar. Not only is he England's foremost food writer (having been the former food and drink editor of House Beautiful, The Sunday Times of London, the English Harper's Bazaar and Vogue magazines, The Daily Telegraph and Homes & Gardens), he has also written the cookbooks that many of us learned to cook from or to use in furthering our cooking knowledge.

When I met him as he visited Toronto to publicize his latest book, Cooking with Carrier (Gage, $19.95), it was almost an earth-shattering decision to choose the right lunch spot. Finally I gave up trying to second-guess what would please him and decided on Joso's, one of my favorite places. When he arrived, he began joking with the chef and staff in the kitchen and my fears were quelled.

He turned out to be a romantic and charming personality. He once owned a theater in Montmartre and his background in drama showed as he described his food experiences - obviously the love of his life. He owns two restaurants - Carrier's in London (a must if you are traveling there) and Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk, where he also lives a good deal of the year. He has also started a cooking school there to which both amateurs and professionals are flocking. Recently he started a new magazine, Robert Carrier's Kitchen, which is published weekly.

He spoke of the differences he had found between teaching people and writing for them and expressed delight that people who attended his cooking seminars were so enthusiastic. After 30 years in the food profession, although he himself kept growing and learning, he didn't think everyone's interest would still be so keen.

He has found that people to want to learn the recipes that are cooked in restaurants rather than basic techniques and that some students don't even realize that they do not know the basics. The thing that upsets him the most, however, is that people do not invest more in good equipment, especially knives, pots and pans. He dislikes most kitchen machines, with the exception of food processors, which he thoroughly enjoys using. For more information on his classes, which sound so interesting that I am tempted to attend, write: Carrier Seminar of Cooking, Hintlesham Hall, North Ipswich, Suffolk, England.

Mr. Carrier likes to keep learning about new cuisines, such as Thai cooking. Every year two apprentices are allowed to come to his restaurants to study, but when a Thai chef came a few years ago the restaurant learned more from him than vice versa. This Thai influence is reflected in items on Mr. Carrier's restaurant menus and his course on French Nouvelle Cuisine also emphasizes the oriental influence in cooking.

Mr. Carrier is also revising his first and possibly most famous cookbook, Great Dishes of the World, originally published 1963 (Thomas Nelson & Sons) in order to keep up with people's changing food expectations. He feels that people are now eating lighter meals, they want things to look as beautiful as they taste, and that quick, pan-fried dishes have become very popular. With these points in mind, he will change the popular cookbook to emphasize garnishing, quick cooking and a lighter style.

One of his most prized possessions is an original copy of this book given to him by a man who had used it over the years in running three successful restaurants. The pages of the book, covered in grease from the restaurants and tattered by much use, testified to the fact that Mr. Carrier was his guru in the matter of cooking.

Here's a recipe from Mr. Carrier's new cookbook that is popular at his own restaurants. PATE aux HERBES 1 pound lean pork Butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 pound fresh or 1/4 pound frozen leaf spinach 1/4 pound cooked ham 1/4 pound unsmoked bacon 1/4 pound pork fat 1/4 pound cooked beef tongue 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 tbsps. finely chopped fresh basil (or 1 tbsp. dried) 2 tbsps. finely chopped fresh parsley 2 tbsps. finely chopped chervil (or 1 tbsp. dried) 24 spikes rosemary, finely chopped (or 12 spikes dried) 4 eggs, beaten Salt and freshly ground black pepper Cayenne pepper Freshly grated nutmeg 6 ounces chicken livers 2/3 cup heavy cream (whipping) 2 tbsps. unflavored gelatine (2 envelopes) Thin strips of pounded pork fat Gherkins Cut the pork into small cubes, place in blender or food processor and blend until minced. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large frying pan, add chopped onion and saute, stirring constantly, until it is transparent. Add spinach and continue to cook, stirring, until the spinach has wilted (if fresh). Remove onions and spinach and chop coarsely. Add onion and spinach mixture to pork and blend again. Transfer to a large mixing bowl.

Dice ham, bacon, pork fat and beef tongue and add to green pate mixture. Then add finely chopped garlic and fresh herbs.

Stir in the beaten eggs and add the salt and freshly ground pepper, cayenne and nutmeg to taste.

Dice chicken livers and saute in 2 tablespoons butter until golden.

Stir in cream and gelatine (which you have dissolved in a little water) and mix well. The raw pate with now be a nice, loose, spoon able mixture ready for cooking.

Line the bottom and sides of an ovenproof terrine with thin stips of pounded pork fat. (Note: you can ask the butcher to do this for you. But I warn you, don't ask him on a busy Saturday morning when the shop is crowded.) Spoon pate mixture into terrine and cover with thin strips of pork fat. Cook in a preheated 325 degrees F. slow oven for 1/2 hour and then lower the heat to 300 degrees F. and cook another 30 to 40 minutes.

Remove from oven to cool, pressing excess juices out of the terrine with a board or back of a spoon. Serve cold, cut into slices, with gherkins.

Note: To remove pate from the terrine, place terrine in a pan of hot water for a minute or two then insert a sharp pointed knife all around pate loosening it from the sides of the terrine. Turn terrine upside down over serving plate and pate will slide easily. Serves 10 to 12.

Ce Marking Boats Ensure Legal Compliance And Marine Safety

The importers of European Union (EU) will never take the risk of importing a boat or recreational craft without CE marking. CE mark is an obligatory mark, which ensures a conformance with the requirements of CE directives. It is mandatory, if you want to place your product in the European Economic Area (EEA) or sail it on the European water bodies. This make your product valid for sale, and the government believes that it is placed legally in the market.

Getting a CE-mark boat (ce-mrka bt) is the sole responsibility of a manufacturer. This step was taken by the government to remove the trade barriers to European countries, leading to a CE mark on products manufactured in non-EU countries. The boats build for leisure or sports with a hull length of 2.5 to 24 meters are covered under the directive. The process of getting the mark is essential and complicated. Those people, who follow proper health and safety standards will not have any problem in obtaining the certification.

A CE boat (ce bt) is safe to use both for boating and the marine environment. There are various service providers, who help in getting this label on your vessel. These firms work under the notified bodies of the government and provide different range of services to manufacturers as well as importers. They guide the manufacturers on the manufacturing process. You can take their assistance in making a design in accordance with the legal requirements.

The importers, who import boats from a Non-European country, are liable to ensure CE certification. This requirement is even applicable on personal crafts and jet skis. A CE-mark boat (ce-mrka bt) gives you a safe boating experience. The services of a certification firm include everything from physical checking to final testing of the craft's structure. A new amendment to the recreational craft directive asks for a sound test. It requires measurement of sound, preparing the essential documents and submitting them to a notified body. These firms help you in meeting all the initial directives along with the new updates.

Approach a service provider, who is authorized to execute the post construction checks. The process of getting a CE boat (ce bt) includes searching for a genuine certification company and requesting them for carrying out the process. If, they feel that the boat will meet the legal requirement, they will ask for a share of payment to start the further examination. After the analysis, you will be reported on the modifications required in your product. Finally, they will check for the proper implementation of the changes and will send you documents with label plate. You can schedule the certification process by filling the online booking form.

About the Author:
All those people, who want to own a CE boat (Ce Bt) can contact Marine Certification for the assessment process. We work, through a notified body, to ensure CE-mark boat (Ce-Mrka Bt) to our clients. We follow a systematic process to provide the required documentation.

NKorean farmers cite grave drought; aid unlikely

NAMPHO, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea is reporting a serious drought that could worsen already critical food shortages, but help is unlikely to come from the United States and South Korea following Pyongyang's widely criticized rocket launch.

North Korea has had little rain since April 27, with the country's western coastal areas particularly hard hit, according to a government weather agency in Pyongyang. The dry spell threatened to damage crops, officials said, as the country enters a critical planting season and as food supplies from the last harvest dwindle.

In at least one area of South Phyongan Province where journalists from The Associated Press were allowed to visit, the sun-baked fields appeared parched and cracked, and farmers complained of extreme drought conditions. Deeply tanned men, and women in sun bonnets, worked over cabbages and corn seedlings. Farmers cupped individual seedlings as they poured water from blue buckets onto the parched red soil.

"I've been working at the farm for more than 30 years, but I have never experienced this kind of severe drought," An Song Min, a farmer at the Tokhae Cooperative Farm in the Nampho area, told the AP.

It was not clear whether the conditions around Nampho were representative of a wider region. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said it had not yet visited the affected regions to confirm the extent and severity of the reported drought.

North Korea has suffered chronic food shortages for the past two decades because of economic and agricultural mismanagement as well as natural disasters. A famine in the 1990s killed an estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

The country's past appeals for food aid have been met with some skepticism, however, amid concerns that aid would be diverted to the military and Pyongyang elite without reaching the hungry.

The U.S. government suspended food handouts to North Korea in 2009 after Pyongyang expelled foreign food distribution monitors.

In February, the U.S. reversed course and agreed to provide 240,000 metric tons of food aid in exchange for a freeze in nuclear and missile activities.

However, the deal collapsed after North Korea launched a long-range rocket last month in what it called a failed attempt to send a satellite into space to study the weather.

The launch was widely criticized by the United States and others as a thinly disguised attempt to test missile technology in violation of both the U.S. food deal and U.N. bans on North Korean ballistic tests. The launch drew U.N. Security Council condemnation.

"The United States would like to get to a place where we could once again contemplate providing nutritional assistance to North Korea," Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korea, said last week. "Sadly, that is not the case right now, in the wake of their decision, in March, to announce" the rocket launch.

South Korea's conservative government has cut off large-scale direct food aid to North Korea since taking office in 2008, saying Pyongyang should first take steps toward nuclear disarmament.

North Korea's dry spell is expected to last until the end of the month, the country's State Hydrometeorological Administration said.

Bureaucrats and workers have been mobilized to irrigate farms, repair wells and keep water-pumping equipment operating, state media reported.

Seedlings are being moved from seed beds to the fields, where they need enough moisture to form strong roots, Percy Misika, the Food and Agriculture Organization's representative for China, North Korea and Mongolia, said Monday from Beijing.

"Any dry spell at this critical time means the seedlings are definitely going to wilt away, and there will be no harvest at the end of the day," he said.

Misika said FAO officials are trying to visit areas suffering from a lack of rain. "If it's going to last for one or two weeks more, it's going to be critical, but if it's a shorter period of time there could be hope," he said.

Droughts are common in spring, winter and autumn in North Korea, the FAO said in a special report late last year. Climate change has led to more extreme weather, making winters colder, summers packed with more intense rain and typhoons, and droughts more frequent and prolonged, it said.

South Korea's Korea Meteorological Administration said it could not confirm the dry spell without on-the-ground equipment, though satellite photos have shown no big rain clouds over North Korea since late April. North Korean dispatches sent to an international weather center also show the country has had little rain over the past month, spokesman Jang Hyun-sik said in Seoul.

Ever since he arrived here last August, Mr. Locke?s image as a ?regular guy? has won widespread admiration from Chinese bloggers and, it seems, irked the authorities.

The way he tried to get a discount at Starbucks with a coupon en route to Beijing, and carried his own backpack, is the polar opposite of the way aloof and pampered Chinese officials behave. So when Chinese citizens praise him, by implication they are criticizing their own leaders.

Lashing out at the US ambassador earlier this month for his role in protecting blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, the Beijing Daily published a strongly worded criticism of his ?little tricks.?

But readers? reactions to the editorial were so negative that within hours ?Beijing Daily? was a banned search word on the Chinese Internet, effectively closing down social media debate on the article.

That setback does not appear to have chastened Beijing Daily, however, and today the paper put its foot in it again.

Editors used the daily?s account on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like platform, to post a snide request, responding to another post about Locke?s wealth.

?Will Gary Locke please disclose his personal assets?? it asked.

The question was, perhaps, conceived as a sideways commentary on the lively debate currently underway in China about the need for top officials here ? often accused of corruption ? to disclose their wealth.

But of course, the editors simply revealed their ignorance. As scornful readers quickly informed them, Locke HAS disclosed his personal assets, just like every other member of the US government. (According to his 2010 declaration, he is worth between $1,356,025 and $7,615,999, which makes him the sixth richest person in the executive branch.)

?Of course Gary Locke?s personal assets have been disclosed,? read one comment on the Beijing Daily post. ?And what about the assets of those imperial officials [of ours]?

Within hours, Beijing Daily?s original post and all comments on it had been deleted from Sina Weibo, according to David Bandurski of Hong Kong University?s China Media Project, who tracked the incident in real time.

U.N. Security Council condemns Syria over massacre

AMMAN/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council on Sunday unanimously condemned the killing of at least 108 people, including many children, in the Syrian town of Houla, a sign of mounting outrage at the massacre that the government and rebels blamed on each other.

Images of bloodied and lifeless young bodies, laid carefully side by side after the onslaught on Friday, triggered shock around the world and underlined the failure of a six-week-old U.N. ceasefire plan to stop the violence.

Western and Arab states opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad put the blame for the deaths squarely on the government. But Damascus rejected the charge.

"The Security Council condemned in the strongest possible terms the killings, confirmed by United Nations observers, of dozens of men, women and children and the wounding of hundreds more in the village of (Houla), near Homs, in attacks that involved a series of government artillery and tank shellings on a residential neighborhood," the non-binding statement said.

"Such outrageous use of force against civilian population constitutes a violation of applicable international law and of the commitments of the Syrian Government under United Nations Security Council Resolutions," the statement said.

The United Nations believes that at least 108 people were killed in Houla, U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said.

Russia, which along with China has vetoed two Security Council resolutions calling for tougher action against Damascus, said the "tragic" events in Syria deserve condemnation and called for a U.N. assessment of the violence there.

Russian Deputy U.N. Ambassador Alexander Pankin said the circumstances surrounding the massacre were "murky" and rejected the idea that the evidence clearly showed Damascus was guilty.

The head of the U.N. observer force, General Robert Mood, briefed the council by video link. Pankin said Mood "did not link directly the (army's) shelling with numbers of deaths."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent the council a letter that appeared to give ammunition to both sides.

He said the observers "viewed the bodies of the dead and confirmed from an examination of ordnance that artillery and tank shells were fired at a residential neighborhood." The rebels do not have artillery and tanks.

But Ban also said U.N. monitors observed shotgun wounds on some of the bodies, which could indicate close-range attacks by rebels, as Pankin suggested, or could be the result of follow-up attacks by the army after it stopped shelling.

"While the detailed circumstances are unknown, we can confirm that there has been artillery and mortar shelling," Ban said. "There have also been other forms of violence, including shootings at close range and severe physical abuse."

Ban is expected to brief the Security Council on the situation in Syria on Wednesday.

RUSSIA OPPOSES SANCTIONS

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant did not have any doubts about who was responsible for the events in Houla.

"It seems quite clear that the massacre in Houla was caused by heavy bombardment, by government artillery and tanks," Lyall Grant said. After the council meeting he said it was time for the council to discuss "next steps" - a code word for sanctions.

"The fact is, it is an atrocity and it was perpetrated by the Syrian government," Lyall Grant said.

Russia, however, rejects the idea of sanctioning its ally and has accused the United States and Europe of pursuing Libya-style regime change in Syria, where Assad has been trying to crush a 14-month-old insurgency that began peacefully but has become increasingly militarized.

Syria is home to the Russian navy's only warm-water port outside of the former Soviet Union and is a major purchaser of Russian weapons.

Syrian Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari reiterated his government's denial, saying the massacre was committed by "armed terrorist groups" - the Syrian government's term for the rebels. He also dismissed the "tsunami of lies" of the British, French and German envoys, who blamed the government for the massacre.

"Women, children and old men were shot dead. This is not the hallmark of the heroic Syrian army," Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdesi told reporters in Damascus.

The Houla massacre is among the worst carnage in the uprising against Assad, which has cost about 10,000 lives.

In his public comments, Mood has called the killings "a very tragical expression" of the situation in Syria, but refrained from apportioning blame.

"For myself, I have had patrols on the ground all the day yesterday afternoon and today we are gathering facts on the ground and then we will draw our own conclusions," Mood told the BBC in a telephone interview on Sunday.

But Ban and Kofi Annan, the U.N. and Arab League envoy for Syria, accused the Syrian government of using artillery in populated areas.

"This appalling and brutal crime involving indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force is a flagrant violation of international law and of the commitments of the Syrian Government to cease the use of heavy weapons in population centers and violence in all its forms," they said in a joint statement on Saturday.

Annan is planning to visit Damascus soon. Ja'afari suggested Annan could arrive as early as Monday.

Russia's Pankin said that whoever caused the massacre wanted to disrupt Annan's visit. "We don't believe the Syrian government would be interested in spoiling the visit of (Annan) ... by doing something like that."

"CORPSES WERE PILED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER"

Opposition activists said Assad's forces shelled Houla after a protest and then clashed with fighters from the Sunni Muslim-led insurgency.

Activists say Assad's "shabbiha" militia, loyal to an establishment dominated by members of the minority Alawite sect, then hacked dozens of the victims to death, or shot them.

Maysara al-Hilawi said he saw the bodies of six children and their parents in a ransacked house in the town.

"The Abdelrazzak family house was the first one I entered. The children's corpses were piled on top of each other, either with their throats cut or shot at close range," Hilawi, an opposition activist, said by telephone from the area.

A video distributed by activists showed an injured woman, who said she had survived the massacre, blaming shabbiha militiamen for the carnage.

"They entered our homes ... men wearing fatigues herding us like sheep in the room and started spraying bullets at us," the woman said. "My father died and my brother, my mother's only son. Seven sisters were killed," the woman said lying next to another injured woman and near a baby with a chest wound.

The White House said it was horrified by credible reports of brutal attacks on women and children in Houla.

"These acts serve as a vile testament to an illegitimate regime that responds to peaceful political protest with unspeakable and inhuman brutality," a White House spokesman said.

The Gulf Cooperation Council of Sunni-led monarchies accused Assad's soldiers of using excessive force and urged the international community to "assume its responsibilities to halt the daily bloodshed in Syria."

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton spoke of a "heinous act perpetrated by the Syrian regime against its own civilian population" in a statement on Sunday. U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said in a statement that it could amount to crimes against humanity or other war crimes.

On Sunday, at least 30 people were killed when Syrian army tanks shelled residential neighborhoods in the city of Hama that have been serving as bases for rebel attacks against loyalist forces, opposition activists said. The reports could not be verified independently.

Although the ceasefire plan negotiated by Annan has failed to stop the violence, the United Nations is nearing full deployment of a 300-strong unarmed observer force meant to monitor a truce.

The plan calls for a truce, withdrawal of troops from cities and dialogue between government and opposition.

Syria calls the revolt a "terrorist" conspiracy run from abroad, a veiled reference to Sunni Muslim Gulf powers that want to see weapons provided to the insurgents.

Red Sox's Valentine calls out Rays' coaches

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 7:45 p.m. ET May 26, 2012

BOSTON (AP) - Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine called out the Tampa Bay Rays' coaching staff a day after the teams were involved in a benches-clearing scrum.

Valentine said the Rays' staff escalated the tense situation in the ninth inning of Tampa Bay's 7-4 win on Friday night after Red Sox reliever Franklin Morales hit Luke Scott on the right leg. He called their actions as "unprofessional."

"I thought their coaches were really aggressive, as a matter of fact I took offense to the aggressiveness of their coaches." Valentine said. "I thought it was really unprofessional. I was really proud of the way my coaches and what they were trying to do, what they were supposed to do in those situations.

"(The Rays coaches) seemed very immature and out of control," Valentine said. "Coaches are supposed to stop those things from happening and their coaches were agitating, aggravating, and instigating the situation."

Rays manager Joe Maddon was asked a few different times to comment on Valentine's accusations, but avoided it by specifically praising Boston's players.

"I covered everything I wanted to cover on that last night," Maddon said. "The thing I want to cover today is how much respect I have for the Red Sox players. I've been doing this for seven, eight years in the American League East and I have a strong feeling for the professionalism of the Red Sox players during that time - guys like (David) Ortiz and (Dustin) Pedroia and (Kevin) Youkilis and (Josh) Beckett, who's pitching tonight. My respect goes out to them.

"As we move this thing forward, I think we have that kind of respect with this group here. These players have come here to play baseball. We come here to play hard every night," Maddon added. "We've come to think about it as the `Rays way' of doing things."

Benches cleared after Morales threw behind DH Luke Scott with the first pitch of an at-bat and hit him on a 3-1 pitch. Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia stepped in front of Scott as he was looking out at Morales when the benches and bullpens emptied. There was a lot of pushing and shoving along the first base line that carried over behind home plate before order was restored.

Boston pitching coach Bob McClure and bench coach Tim Bogar were noticeably in the middle of things with Rays players.

Afterward, Maddon said of the Red Sox's actions:

"That's truly somebody flexing their muscles on the other side and they need to put them in their back pocket and understand they can hurt their own team for something like that," Maddon said. "To be really carelessly incompetent on their side and truly try to hit someone and throw behind somebody and hitting them in the leg for all the wrong reasons eventually they can get their own guys hurt. That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic. I'll use all those words.

"That was ridiculous. It was absurd, idiotic." He later said the video would show who wanted Morales' action to take place.

Barroom Brawl Business Ethics in America - BartBlog - Bartcop

Tough times in the land of endless opportunities.

Barroom brawls used to be an integral part of the cinematic formula for a Western movie, but the one and only time the World?s Laziest Journalist witnessed a real life m?l?e in a tavern occurred just about fifty years ago. The long dormant memories were quickly revived this past week during an effort to assess the trend spotting potential for connecting several business news stories from the San Francisco Bay area.

The Golden State Warriors (n?e Philadelphia Warriors) announced that since they have gotten a sweetheart real estate deal in Frisco, it was time to say adios to Oakland. It seems that the team owners will be gifted with some prime property on the waterfront and will provide their own funding for the construction of a new sports stadium entertainment complex in the postcard perfect setting.

The dramatic business news development occurred in ?sucker punch? quick fashion this week. On Monday, the sports reporters were saying that something was developing. On Tuesday, a press conference on a pier on the bayside of fog city was being held.

The Sacramento Kings are scrambling to get a development deal from their hometown. In Los Angeles, efforts to get the L. A. City Council to build a football stadium in the downtown area and make offers to lure a new tenant into it, are a recurring political refrain. The Forty-niners football team has announced plans to split from San Francisco.

On Tuesday morning, John Madden, on his daily radio commentary show on KCBS radio, noted that Oakland had been there for professional sports in the past and that some reciprocal loyalty seemed to be conspicuous by its absence.

Meanwhile the business news seemed to be obsessing on the Facebook stock imbroglio. It seems that one particular company advised their best clients to sit on the bench while the suckers took a bath. The good ole boys take care of their own; the rest can fend for themselves. Business has adopted W. C. Field?s advice, ?Never Give a Sucker and even break,? as the new code of ethics.

Jamie Diamon (Jamie Diamond sounds like a good name for a go-go dancer, eh?) and his merry band of pranksters seem to be positioning their company for a new rendition of the ever popular ?Too Big to Fail? song and dance routine that precedes a bid for a government bail-out.

Legally the paper work for home foreclosures (at least in California) seems questionable at best and possibly unlawful, but the foreclosures roll on like a bad dream.

President Obama led supporters to believe that he was sympathetic to the needs of people who derived medicinal value from cannabis. Now, the government efforts to shut down the sites where pot can be sold as a remedy for a variety of medical conditions are occurring much more frequently.

What politician was the first to use the philosophy: ?Don?t listen to what I say; watch what I do!??

In 1968, Richard Nixon got elected President by promising to end the war in Vietnam. He used the same platform to get reelected in 1972. President Obama intimated to the voters in 2008, that he would take care of two unpopular wars. In 2012, Obama seems content to recycle the Roosevelt slogan ?Prosperity is just around the corner.?

During the Vietnam War, the clergy of the Catholic Church was more concerned with the birth control issue than with the morality of using Agent Orange. Now Notre Dame is drawing a line in the sand over the inclusion of contraceptives in health programs rather than worrying about any possible similarities between America?s drone strikes and the Condor Legion?s bombing of Guernica.

The paradigm for all this is that capitalists use the barroom brawl ethics of a motorcycle gang to content with any opposition. If you pick a fight with a motorcycle gang member other members of that club who are there will respond en masse. If you take on a one percenter, he and the politicians, the police, the press, and the clergy will form a line of defense that will wear out any attacker.

On Tuesday, a very random casual poll of folks in San Francisco indicated that the person in the street didn?t care about where the Golden State Warriors called home. (One year, several decades ago, they played six ?home? games in San Diego.)

A one percenter sports team owner realizes that sports fans are just like the motor oil used to lubricate an engine. A complete change is recommended for maximum efficiency or to increase profit margin.

Isn?t it rather poignant to note that immediately after the Facebook debacle, President Obama showed up in Silicone Valley to solicit campaign donations and the folks who bought the stock without the benefit of the brokers? warning for high rollers have to hope some long drawn out law suit helps them recover their losses?

The good ole boys network survives! Wasn?t there a Johnny Paycheck song that noted ?the big man plays while the little man pays??

Isn?t it very odd how politicians seem to be oblivious to the little people getting fleeced in America, but they get their panties all in a wad when some Secret Service members sew their wild oats in a foreign country? (Isn?t prostitution legal in the country where the incident occurred?)

Is there one TV network that is becoming synonymous with sports?

Is there one TV network that is synonymous with politics?

Is there one TV network that has the audience with the lowest ?well informed? ratings?

Wouldn?t it be a co-inky-dink if one name was the correct answer to all three of those questions? You know; the network with the motto: ?We deceive; you pick up the check.? What was the country song with the line: ?Six rounds were bought, and I bought five!??

This columnist has heard that the police in Berkeley have started a program of waking up sleeping vagrants in the middle of the night. (Who else got the sleep deprivation treatment?) One source indicated that tickets were being issued but our efforts to fact check that aspect of the story have been inconclusive.

How many politicians talk to the homeless? We have seen one member of the Berkeley City council talking to a homeless man recently, but when was the last time that President Obama talked to a homeless person? When was the last time the governor of California talked to a homeless person?

In the movie ?Charlie Wilson?s War,? a turning point came when the congressman got some fellow politicians to visit a refugee camp and talk with some of the victims of the Russian Invasion of Afghanistan.

Wait! There is a subtle difference here. The one percenters can make a profit on a war in a foreign country and feel good about helping the poor wretches who live near the battlefield, but they are also making scads of money on the foreclosure trend so why change that?

If the owners of the Golden State Warriors can turn a profit on the valuable real estate, could any subsequent sizable campaign contributions they might make to the politicians who helped expedite the change of venue be misconstrued as being ?commission checks??

The fact is that capitalists don?t care who get hurt by their ruthless pursuit of increased profits, but barroom brawlers do have some regard for innocent bystanders. In the aforementioned donnybrook in the gin mill, in the mid Sixties, the columnist and his buddy were surrounded by ten to fifteen pairs of guys engaged in fisticuffs, but since we were perceived as two outsiders (it was our first visit to that city and that ?watering hole?), who were not recognized by either of the fray?s rival factions, as being members of the opposition group, we were able to stroll away from the fracas unscathed. Our reaction was to resort to the common clich? of ?wow that was just like a scene in a John Wayne Western.?

[Note from the Photo Desk: Reportedly the Golden State Warriors will use the Bay Bridge in their new logo. The Golden Gate Bridge will celebrate its 75 birthday this weekend.

If the battleship Iowa?s departure for its new home in San Pedro and the Golden Gate Bridge?s birthday celebration occur simultaneously, during the Memorial Day Weekend; do ya think that an aerial photo showing the Iowa approaching the Golden Gate Bridge (this will be the last time an American battleship ever passes under the Golden Gate Bridge) will be used above the fold on page one of the next day?s edition of the New York Times? That image for the Memorial Day issue would be priceless.]

Oliver Goldsmith wrote: ?Laws grind the poor, and rich men rule the law.?

Now, the disk jockey will play ?Ballroom Blitz,? Roger Miller?s ?Dang me!,? and the Sir Douglas Quintet song ?I?m Just Tired of Getting? Burned.? We have to go donate some of our used satin sheets to the local shelter for the homeless. Have a ?posh soiree at Wayne Manor? type week.
