Chrysler recalls 4,278 Viper sports cars on airbag issue

DETROIT | Fri Feb 15, 2013 1:26pm GMT

DETROIT (Reuters) - Chrysler Group LLC said on Friday it is recalling 4,278 Dodge Viper sports cars globally to fix a part that could cause the airbags to inadvertently deploy, expanding a recall from last fall.

The U.S. automaker, controlled by Fiat SpA (FIA.MI), is recalling 3,660 of the Vipers in the United States from model years 2003 and 2004 to address a potential for the front airbags or seat belt pretensioners to mistakenly deploy. Also affected are 440 cars in Canada, 10 in Mexico and 168 in the rest of the world.

Chrysler said it is unaware of any inadvertent deployments in the Vipers. An interim notification is expected to be sent this month with a remedy available later in the year, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Affected vehicles will be fitted, at no charge, with a harness filter that restores a control module's capacity to manage the airbag and pretensioner deployment.

Last November, Chrysler recalled about 923,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs from model years 2002 through 2004 for the same issue.

Wrestling will be back, says Victoria's long standing coach

The International Olympic Committee voted wrestling out for the 2020 Games and beyond on Tuesday. The caretakers of the Games put the sport to the curb despite it being an original part of the modern Games, which started in 1896.

It came as a surprise to most in the wrestling community. Especially with reports wrestling is unlikely to find its way back in.

The vote does have to be ratified in September, near about the same time either Istanbul, Madrid or Tokyo will be named host of the 2020 Games.

?Most of the wrestling is in Russia and the (Middle East), and I can see them just going crazy,? said local coach Ed Ashmore.

As the pillar of the local wrestling community, Ashmore has kept the sport alive in Victoria, having coached it here since 1964.

He helped Victoria athletes Taras Hryb (Munich 1972) and Clark Davis (Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988) go to the Olympics, and sent multiple athletes to provincial and national titles.

?I?m not overly excited about the vote but my gut feeling is it will get back in again,? Ashmore said.

?The Olympics are getting too big, way too costly, and too many events. Wrestling is the original but one of the things is it needs to be more exciting. They try to make it that way, but the average joe doesn?t watch it, maybe the finals.?

Wrestling has seen better days in Victoria and there are currently only two high school wrestling teams, Esquimalt High and Reynolds secondary. Everyone else has the option of wrestling with the Victoria Commonwealth Bulldogs out of Cedar Hill middle school, a team started by Ashmore.

Among those on the Bulldogs are a pair of brothers, Donovan and Michael Huynh, cousins of Olympic gold medallist Carole Huynh. Ashmore?s hope is that the Olympic decision won?t affect wrestling numbers here in Victoria, at least in the short term. But over time, it could lead to more government cuts funding to wrestling, Ashmore said.

The high school provincial wrestling championships take place in Duncan, Feb. 28 to March 2.

Small business, big history

Hattie Barnes

Hattie Barnes, director of Urban Impact.

One of the ironies of the success of the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham and elsewhere is that once the Jim Crow laws fell and African-Americans could live as fully enfranchised citizens, some of the institutions they had created under segregation began to crumble.

?Before Birmingham was integrated, we had our own neighborhoods, own entertainment districts and own business districts,? explained Hattie Barnes, the director of the city-funded Urban Impact. The non-profit agency was founded nearly 35 years ago to help revitalize black institutions, especially the Fourth Avenue Historic District where it has offices at 1701 4th Avenue North.

Once a thriving area that included restaurants, barber shops, churches, movie theaters and other businesses catering to African-Americans, the area (which includes 3rd, 4th and 5th Avenues and 15th through 18th Streets north) was once a hub for urban life.

?You could say it was the heart of black Birmingham in the ?40s, ?50s and into the ?60s,? Barnes said as she strolled down Fourth Avenue, waving and calling out to business owners up and down the street. ?But once African-Americans got their rights and could go and live just about anywhere they wanted, the area began a slow decline.?

In fact, by the time Richard Arrington, the city?s first black mayor, called Urban Impact in to help revitalize the area in 1980, there were fewer than 20 businesses still open.

?Now we?ve got well over 50 businesses up and running and more on the way,? Barnes said.

Urban Impact acts as a referral agency to federal, state and local governments and private organizations that have expertise in small business concerns.

Early on, the non-profit also helped establish a federal Land Bank Program designed to provide low interest loans to local people who wanted to establish businesses in the area and borrow money to improve existing enterprises.

?One of the problems we had was that much of the land and many of the buildings in the district were owned by absentee landlords who did not really see the profit in keeping businesses opened or their properties in good shape,? Barnes said. ?Now, every one of our businesses is locally owned and operated and a real sense of community is being reestablished,? she said as she popped into the Touch of Elegance Barber Shop on Fourth Avenue, where Sylvester Dawson waited for a customer to show up.

Barber Sylvester Dawson at Touch of Elegance

Sylvester Dawson, barber and proprietor of Touch of Elegance.

?I bought this shop four years ago and I?m still here,? he said with a grin as he lounged in one of his reclining chairs. ?This recession has hurt, but people always need a haircut and I am here to provide that service.?

As in the movies, Dawson?s establishment often serves as an informal town hall for the neighborhood, he said.

?Oh, people get to talking in here, all right,? he said. ?They take up every subject under the sun that men like to talk about and it sometimes gets loud in here until everybody has their say-so.?

The boundaries of the Fourth Avenue District include many black Birmingham cultural landmarks, including the old Carver Theater, now home to the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame; Kelly Ingram Park, where so many civil rights marches of the ?60s originated; the adjoining Birmingham Civil Rights Institute; and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, where four little girls were killed a 1963 bombing that stirred the nation?s conscience.

The old Famous Theater Building on Fourth Avenue is one of the district?s best success stories, Barnes said. Several years ago, Nolanda Bearden, a local entrepreneur, renovated its ground floor into office space and turned the upper floors into a loft where she lives.

The A.G. Gaston Motel, founded by perhaps Birmingham?s wealthiest black businessman, was once a site of many civil rights planning sessions. Now owned by the city, the landmark still stands in the district, as do the Nelson Brothers? Caf? and the old black Masonic Temple.

But perhaps the most unique feature of the district lies at the corner of Fourth Avenue and 18th Street ? the Eddie Kendrick Memorial Park, named after one of the founding members of R&B superstars the Temptations.

The tiny park, which is almost hidden from the street by thick bushes and trees, features a full-sized iron statue of Birmingham native Kendrick, as well as bas-relief likenesses of four of the other Temptations.

Created about 15 years ago by Donald McDowell, a traveling artist who also has works on display in Kelly Ingram Park, the Kendrick park provides seclusion from the bustle of the city, as well as rest on a couple of wrought iron benches.

And if while sitting and contemplating Kendrick captured in full voice at the microphone, you begin to actually hear songs by the ?Tempting Temptations,? well, it?s not just your imagination.

?I guess you could say part of my job description is disc jockey, too,? Barnes laughed. ?We?ve got several CDs with nothing but Temptations music on them, and one of the first things I do when I get in the office in the morning is put one of them in the player and turn on the music down at the park.?

Mounted inconspicuously in the trees are speakers over which Temptations hits are played throughout the day. The wires from the speakers lead back to the Urban Impact offices a block away, where Barnes sees to it that the music rarely stops.

?I keep them going all day,? she said, ?and the last thing I do when I leave in the afternoon is put on another CD so the music continues for another hour or so. I think the park and the music is one of the things that helps define this street and the district.?

Wall Street dips on ?European slowdown

Stocks fell early Thursday as a slowdown in Europe overshadowed a flurry of mergers in the U.S.

Germany's economy shrank in the final three months of last year. The slowdown in Europe's largest economy deepened the recession across the region. That pulled down European stock markets.

American Airlines and U.S. Airways have agreed to combine in an $11 billion deal that creates the world's largest airline. Ketchup maker H.J. Heinz is selling itself for $23 billion to an investment group that includes Warren Buffett. That acquisition follows another $20 billion deal earlier this month ? Dell Computer's move to take itself private.

On the jobs front, the government reported that the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell by 27,000 last week, an indication that hiring could improve.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 51.70 points, or 0.37 percent, at 13,931.21. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 5.62 points, or 0.37 percent, at 1,514.71. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 13.72 points, or 0.43 percent, at 3,183.16.

Though weakness in Europe has persisted over recent quarters, its implications for global growth and U.S. corporate profits spurred some profit-taking on Wall Street.

A contraction of 0.6 percent in gross domestic product in the euro zone was the steepest for the bloc since the first quarter of 2009, while Japan's GDP shrank 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter, crushing expectations of a modest return to growth.

The S&P 500 has gained 6.6 percent so far this year, though a dearth of fresh incentives has kept trading thin over the past few sessions.

U.S. data showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected in the latest week.

That suggests the job market is improving, said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

"But it won't be much of a catalyst for the market this morning because of ... the news out of Europe," he said.

Cardillo said a weaker euro, down 0.8 percent versus the U.S. dollar, was also a downward pressure on markets.

Shrinking European economies translated to a 5-percent drop in revenue from the region for Cisco Systems , which nonetheless beat estimates as it reported its results Wednesday. The company's shares pared a more than 2 percent earlier decline to trade 0.6 percent lower before the bell.

General Motors reported a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter profit on Thursday, also citing bigger losses in Europe alongside lower prices in its core North American market.

Merger and acquisition activity indicated investors saw value in the market even after its recent gains.

H.J. Heinz Co shares jumped after it said that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital will buy the company for $72.50 a share, or $28 billion including debt.

U.S. stocks closed little changed in light trading Wednesday, as investors remained cautious after the S&P 500 index hit its highest intraday level since November 2007.

Claes Johnson on Mathematics and Science: Mathematics Reform ...

WSJ reports?on reform of mathematics education combining the power of the human brain and the computer:
  • Jon McLoone is Content Director for computerbasedmath.org, a project to redefine school math education assuming the use of computers. The company announced a deal Monday with the Estonian Education ministry to trial a self-contained statistics program replacing the more traditional curriculum.
  • Schoolchildren in 30 schools in Estonia may be able to escape this misery, as they will shortly be embarking on a pilot for a new way of learning mathematics, computer-based mathematics, that reduces the emphasis on computation ? doing sums ? and increases the emphasis on understanding the uses of mathematics in real-world examples (?should I insure my mobile, how long will I live, or?what makes a beautiful shape?).
  • Estonia has been at the forefront of education reform. Last year it rolled out a trial to teach children from as young as seven robotics and how to program.

Save Port Meadow protesters at Oxford Town Hall on Thursday night Save Port Meadow protesters at Oxford Town Hall on Thursday night

FORMER civic leaders last night claimed there had been a ?massive collective failure? in the building of student accommodation blocks near Port Meadow.

Five former Lord Mayors of the city have welcomed talks between the city council and Oxford University, which is building in Roger Dudman Way.

At a planning meeting last Thursday, councillors voted to begin talks with the university to try to persuade it to reduce the height of the buildings.

In a letter to the Oxford Mail, Lib Dems John Goddard, Alan Armitage and Jim Campbell, along with Labour?s Mary Clarkson and Green Elise Benjamin, said they acknowledged the need for more student accommodation but said the impact of the new buildings on Port Meadow had not been forseen.

The letter said: ?We believe that, without any evil intent, there has been a massive collective failure to properly anticipate and visualise the outcome.?

They said failure to act would cause ?lasting damage?.

A university spokesman said: ?A meeting on Friday [with the city council] was the first of what will probably be several conversations and we will have more to say when these discussions have been completed.?

Youths with autism spectrum disorder need help transitioning to adult health care

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Health care transition (HCT) services help young people with special health care needs such as asthma or diabetes move from pediatric to adult health care. However, youths with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have less access to these services, which are designed to prevent gaps in care and insurance coverage. A University of Missouri researcher recommends that the medical community develop HCT services for individuals with ASD as a way to ensure consistent and coordinated care and increase their independence and quality of life.

Nancy Cheak-Zamora, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Sciences in the MU School of Health Professions, found that less than a quarter of youths with ASD receive HCT services compared to about half of youths with other special health care needs. Occasionally, young adults lack health services for several years after they leave the care of their pediatricians, but the gap in care is more harmful for young adults with ASD. In addition to their behavioral and communication difficulties, nearly half of youths with ASD have major co-existing medical conditions, such as seizures, gastrointestinal problems or sleep disturbances. These conditions increase the youths' dependence on the health care system and their need for HCT services, Cheak-Zamora said.

"The health care community is doing a great job getting young people with ASD into therapies," Cheak-Zamora said. "However, once the youths age into adulthood, we stop thinking about how to help them address their medical needs and the new challenges they're facing. Similar to educational, vocational or social transitioning, HCT services are necessary to help individuals with ASD function independently."

Cheak-Zamora said health care providers should discuss the transition to adult health care services when their patients with ASD are about 12 years old. As the youths mature, the physicians can gradually give them more responsibilities for their health care so they can develop independence by the time they turn 18. At that point, Cheak-Zamora recommends that the youths, their caregivers, and their pediatricians and adult primary care physicians meet to discuss the youths' heath needs. This meeting can help reduce the risk of anxiety youths with ASD experience when faced with unfamiliar routines and settings that could come with switching to a new provider, she said.

"Most people with ASD are younger than age 18 right now, so in the next decade we're going to get an influx of adults with ASD," Cheak-Zamora said. "Our health care system is currently unprepared to treat their needs."

Cheak-Zamora, who also teaches in the MU Master of Public Health Program, said health care providers are not always trained to implement HCT services and don't receive sufficient financial reimbursement for the services, which can take time away from appointments that the physicians now use to address patients' immediate health needs.

The study, "Disparities in Transition Planning for Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder," was published in the journal Pediatrics.

North Korea conducts third nuclear test, drawing new sanctions threat

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea conducted its third nuclear test on Tuesday in defiance of existing U.N. resolutions, angering the United States and Japan and prompting its only major ally, China, to call for calm.

The North said the test had "greater explosive force" than the 2006 and 2009 tests that were widely seen as small-scale. Its KCNA news agency said it had used a "miniaturized" and lighter nuclear device, indicating that it had again used plutonium which is more suitable for use as a missile warhead.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the third of his line to rule the country, has presided over two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test during his first a year in power, pursuing policies that have propelled his impoverished and malnourished country closer to becoming a nuclear weapons power.

U.S. President Barack Obama labeled the test a "highly provocative act" that hurt regional stability and he and other states that are members of U.N. Security Council pressed for new sanctions on the isolated country.

"The danger posed by North Korea's threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies," Obama said in a statement.

The Security Council will meet later on Tuesday to discuss its reaction to the test, although North Korea is already one of the most heavily sanctioned states in the world and has few external economic links that can be targeted.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the test was a "grave threat" that could not be tolerated. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the test was a "clear and grave violation" of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

China, which has shown signs of increasing exasperation with its neighbor, repeated calls for the "denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula and urged its client state and others to react calmly, while pressing Pyongyang not to ramp up tension further, something the North had threatened in the run-up to the test.

"We strongly urge North Korea to abide by its non-nuclear commitment and not to take any further actions that would worsen the situation", it said in a statement.

China is a permanent member of the Security Council.

South Korea, still technically at war with the North after the 1950-53 civil war ended in a mere truce, said the size of the seismic activity indicated a nuclear explosion slightly larger than the North's two previous tests at 6-7 kilotons, although that is still relatively small. The Hiroshima bomb was around 20 kilotons.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that a seismic event measuring 5.1 magnitude had occurred on Tuesday, with North Korea later confirming the nuclear test.

"It was confirmed that the nuclear test that was carried out at a high level in a safe and perfect manner using a miniaturized and lighter nuclear device with greater explosive force than previously did not pose any negative impact on the surrounding ecological environment," KCNA said.

Despite China's tame response, it likely to be a major embarrassment for Beijing, the North's sole major economic and diplomatic ally.

"The test is hugely insulting to China, which now can be expected to follow through with threats to impose sanctions," said Mark Fitzpatrick of the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank.

North Korea trumpeted the announcement on its state television channel to patriotic music against the backdrop of an image of its national flag.

It linked the test to its technical prowess in launching a long-range rocket in December, a move that triggered the U.N. sanctions, backed by China, that Pyongyang said prompted it to take Tuesday's action.

The North's ultimate aim, Washington believes, is to design an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that could hit the United States. North Korea says the program is aimed merely at putting satellites in space.

North Korea used plutonium in previous nuclear tests and prior to Tuesday there had been speculation it would use highly enriched uranium so as to conserve its plutonium stocks as testing eats into its limited supply of the material that could be used to construct a nuclear bomb.

"VICIOUS CYCLE"

Despite its three nuclear tests and long-range rocket tests, North Korea is not believed to be close to manufacturing a nuclear missile capable of hitting the United States.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Pyongyang had informed China and the United States of its plans to test on Monday, although this could not be confirmed.

When North Korean leader Kim, 30, took power after his father's death in December 2011, there were hopes the he would bring reforms and end Kim Jong-il's "military first" policies.

Instead, the North, whose economy is smaller than it was 20 years ago and where a third of children are believed to be malnourished, appears to be trapped in a cycle of sanctions followed by further provocations.

"The more North Korea shoots missiles, launches satellites or conducts nuclear tests, the more the U.N. Security Council will impose new and more severe sanctions," said Shen Dingli, a professor at Shanghai's Fudan University. "It is an endless, vicious cycle."

But options for the international community appear to be in short supply, as North Korea is already one of the most heavily sanctioned states on earth.

Tuesday's action appeared to have been timed for the run-up to February 16 anniversary celebrations of Kim Jong-il's birthday, as well as to achieved maximum international attention.

Significantly, the test comes at a time of political transition in China, Japan and South Korea, and as Obama begins his second term. He will likely have to tweak his State of the Union address due to be given on Tuesday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is bedding down a new government and South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, prepares to take office on February 25.

China too is in the midst of a once-in-a-decade leadership transition to Xi Jinping, who takes office in March. Both Abe and Xi are staunch nationalists.

The longer-term game plan from Pyongyang may be to restart talks aimed at winning food and financial aid. China urged it to return to the stalled "six-party" talks, hosted by China and including the two Koreas, the United States, Japan and Russia.

Its puny economy and small diplomatic reach mean the North struggles to win attention on the global stage - other than through nuclear tests and attacks on South Korea, last made in 2010.

"Now the next step for North Korea will be to offer talks... - any form to start up discussion again to bring things to their advantage," said Jeung Young-tae, senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.

EU member Denmark called on China to step up to the plate and use its influence at the Security Council to rein in its ally, using unusually blunt language.

"This deserves only one thing and that is a one-sided condemnation," said Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal.

"North Korea is likely the most horrible country on this planet."

Charles Barkley Sees Three, Maybe Five Teams that Can Win the NBA Championship this Season

February 12, 2013 ? 9:40 am by Chris Fedor

It has been a wild first half of the season in the NBA with no shortage of storylines. The Memphis Grizzlies ? yes the Grizzlies ? looked like a legitimate NBA Championship contender out West but then they decided to trade their leading scorer, Rudy Gay, to Toronto to free up some cap space.

Then there?s the Boston Celtics, who looked like they were going to be left behind this season when Rajon Rondo went down with a knee injury. Yet somehow, Boston has played better since the injury, winning seven of their first eight games without their engine on offense.

Of course, the Heat are looking primed for a repeat, especially given the way LeBron James has played all season. Right when it looked like LeBron peaked, he took his game to the next level and should win another MVP Award this season for all he does in Miami.

However, as the All-Star Game approaches this weekend and the trade deadline is right around the corner, the story that won?t end is what has become of the Los Angeles Lakers. It started early with firing head coach Mike Brown and the drama hasn?t stopped nor have the injuries. Steve Nash, Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol have all missed time this season and there is no doubt that has been a contributing factor to the team?s struggles, but it would be hard to picture a postseason without Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. Yet, right when it looks like the team is about to turn the corner, they have a setback and will enter the break with a record under .500.

Charles Barkley joined The Dan Patrick Show to talk about any possible trades before the trade deadline, if he thinks the Heat are just going through the motions or if they just have weaknesses contributing to losses, the way LeBron James has been playing lately, how he thinks the Lakers season will end and what he makes of Jay Williams? comments about former Bulls smoking pot before games.

What players he expects to be traded before the trade deadline:

?I think there?s going to be some trades, to be honest with you, because I think there?s five teams that can probably win the championship. Well, I don?t even know if there?s five that can win it. I think one team could get in that mix if they make a trade. It has a lot to do with?contracts?and guys that are going to be free agents, but there?s about three or four teams that can win the championship, but probably two more if they made a trade. Only really five teams can win the?championship?and the rest are out there playing for fun right now.?

Who are those five?:

?The Heat in the East and the Spurs and Oklahoma City in the West. Those are the three teams that have a legitimate shot at winning the?championship. I don?t want to count Memphis out. I think we have to give Memphis a chance, so there?s three teams in the West and one team in the East and the second team (in the East), it depends on if Derrick Rose comes back. Those are the five.?

Whether he believes the Heat are going through the motions because they understand they just have to get to the playoffs:

?I don?t agree with that. I think that team is just very small and I just think LeBron James is so great and he?s playing at such a high level that he covers up a lot of their flaws. They are so small. They would struggle more if they were playing in the West because there are much better teams in the West. You take away Chicago and Indiana and there?s really not any good teams in the East so that gives them an advantage, but LeBron is just playing at such a high level. He?s their best playmaker, he?s their best rebounder, their best defender, so he just covers up all their flaws. They?re not going through the motions, they just have some flaws that he covers up. They struggle against good teams.?

On LeBron?s peak right now against some of the greats of all-time:

?I?ve already said I think LeBron is one of the 10 greatest players ever and he?s in full bloom. I think when you?re a great player from 25-32 is when you?re at your peak. Those early years, you?re trying to get physically stronger and you?re learning how to play, but I?ve always believed between 25 and 32 is when you have all of your superpowers before the age starts kicking in a little bit, but he?s in that range. I never thought I would compare somebody to Michael Jordan but this guy, he?s scary to watch and it?s an honor to watch him play night-in and night-out. He plays with maximum effort. Think about it, they went out and got Birdman (Chris Andersen) because they can?t rebound the ball but he?s able to go out there and dominate on the boards. He?s their best defender, their best scorer, their best assist guy and it?s pretty special to watch.?

On the end game for the Lakers:

?They ain?t going to make the playoffs and if they do make the playoffs, they?re going to be the eighth seed and they?re going to get spanked by Oklahoma City in the first round. (Host: Well what about the bigger picture for next year? Is Dwight Howard in L.A. next year?) I don?t know that. I?m a firm believer that your dad, your mom, your sisters should shut the hell up. Family members have to be smart enough. First of all, a reporter doesn?t care about you, they don?t care about your?opinion?unless you?re going to say something controversial, so any family members should shut the hell up and never say anything. Nobody cares about your?opinion?unless it?s controversial and Dwight Howard?s dad should not have said that. I think it?s going to be very interesting what?s going to happen with Dwight Howard. I?ve always been a big Dwight Howard fan, a big Dwight Howard fan, but this year he?s disappointed me and not from the fact that he hasn?t played well but just his mental toughness. I?ve always thought he was a franchise player but I?m starting to wonder though, because the one thing you have to do as a franchise player is you have to be tough. It?s an enormous amount of responsibility ? you have to take all the good with the bad, you don?t get to?whine?and complain, you just have to go out there and take it. If they?re beating you down you just have to take it. This is the first year that I?ve seen a kink in Superman?s aura. The first thing I would do, he should?ve already told Kobe Bryant to shut the hell up or I?m going to kick his ass. He should?ve did that, because as a man there?s only so many times you can call me out?publicly. If you call me out privately, OK, I can live with it, but as a man if you keep calling me out?publicly?I have got to come back at you at some point. Kobe Bryant is one of the 10 greatest players ever but I think he?s crossed a line?somewhat?lately. When you start questioning somebody?s toughness,?talking?about they should play hurt and things like that, you?re crossing the line. At some point Dwight has to say, ?Hey man, you need to shut the hell up and get off my back! I?m out here trying to bust my butt, I?m in pain and it?s not up to you. You?re not my coach.? That?s probably the one thing that has disappointed me the most about this whole?scenario.?

On Jay Williams saying players were getting high before games when he was with the Bulls:

?There?s no reason for him to be telling that. You don?t have to tell everything. (Host: I was surprised that he said it.) I just read it?yesterday?and I was disappointed in him because it?s one of those situations where you have to come out and tell who was doing it, because he has put the whole team under the spotlight. (Host: Were you ever around someone who was high during a game?) Not?during?a game, but I played with guys. I?m not a big pot-smoker myself. I think I smoked pot probably five times in my life and it didn?t do anything but make me want to eat potato chips. Remember that commercial about potato chips where you can?t eat just one? I think anytime you smoke pot all it does is make you want to eat a bunch of potato chips. (Host: You never smoked before a game?) Never, never. Once I got to the NBA, I probably smoked pot twice. It was early in my career. I think I did it two times in high school and it didn?t do anything for me. I?m not a big drug guy.?

Stars show skin, but adhere to Grammy dress code

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - There were no "wardrobe malfunctions" but stars at the 55th Grammy Awards were not covering up either, despite being asked to dress "appropriately."

Presenter Jennifer Lopez, wearing a black off-the-shoulder Anthony Vaccarello gown slit up her thigh on one side, joked about her attire.

"As you can see, I read the memo," said the diva who caused a stir a few years ago when she appeared at the Grammys in a Versace gown with a neckline that dropped below her navel.

"You inspired the memo!" said her co-presenter Pitbull, getting a big laugh from the audience.

Broadcaster CBS last week issued a memo asking that Grammy performers and presenters keep their breasts, buttocks and genitals covered up.

"I thought about the dress code. And thought about it again. And that's about it. I respect it. See, I wore clothes," Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland told reporters backstage of her black Georges Chakra gown that featured several strategically placed cutouts.

Singer Kimbra, who recorded "Somebody That I Used to Know" with Gotye, and won Record of the Year, wore a sheer, sparkly dress with a skin-colored layer beneath, giving the illusion she was covered by strategically placed baubles. "I'm fine with the dress code," she said on the red carpet.

Katy Perry bared her cleavage in a green gown, but Beyonce covered up in a black pantsuit for the red carpet and Rihanna chose an elegant red gown.

Redfoo, the flamboyant 37-year-old LMFAO singer, had some fun and showed off his legs on the red carpet, sporting knee length pants to go with his suit.

"I couldn't wear no Speedo ... so I got my suit on," he told Reuters on the red carpet.

Singer Adele's look was a little too conservative for some people's tastes. Her red and pink, flowered-covered frock featured a high neck.

As usual, there were some kooky outfits on display. Al Walser, who was nominated for Best Dance Recording for his single, "I Can't Live Without You," donned an astronaut's space suit.

Born in Switzerland to a mother from Lichtenstein and an African father, Walser explained that being from Lichtenstein was like being from another planet because it is so small.

Blues singer Dr. John wore a Mardi Gras-inspired feathered headdress for his performance with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Oman council backs wage-hike proposals

MUSCAT, Oman (AP) ? State television in Oman says the country's highest advisory body has backed proposals for a steep rise in the minimum wage and curbs on foreign workers.

The move is seen as an attempt to ease worries over unemployment in the tightly ruled Arabian Peninsula nation, which has been hit by sporadic Arab Spring-inspired protests over the past two years.

The state TV report Saturday said the minimum wage would rise by 60 percent to 325 rials ($844) a month in July. Foreign workers ? who come mainly from South Asia ? would be limited to 33 percent of the population, down from an estimated 40 percent currently.

The backing by the Shura Council makes it all but certain the measures will be approved by Oman's ruler, Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Paternos issue report, challenge Freeh's findings

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? A new report commissioned by Joe Paterno's family challenges the conclusion by former FBI director Louis Freeh that the late Penn State coach conspired to conceal child sex abuse allegations against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

An executive summary of the critique released Sunday said the "observations" of Paterno by Freeh in July were unfounded. The team reviewing Freeh's work included former U.S. Attorney General and Pennsylvania Governor Dick Thornburgh, who called the report fundamentally flawed and incomplete, resulting in a "rush to injustice."

The family released was what billed as an exhaustive response on paterno.com. It called Freeh's report a disservice to Paterno, the university community and Sandusky's victims.

Freeh's findings were cited by the NCAA when college sports' governing body levied unprecedented sanctions against the football program for the Sandusky scandal.

How to stay productive during the Snowpocalypse

The Eastern half of the United States is gearing up for a massive winter storm this evening, and we're preparing for the worst. Here's how to stay productive during the impending Snowpocalypse.

Apart from the annoying cold and all the white fluffy stuff, the biggest potential inconveniences that go hand-in-hand with a major snowstorm include power outages or Internet outages. Here's what to do if you wake up tomorrow without power or Internet.

Preparing for a power loss
As the icy winds of Hoth blow through your town, they can destroy power lines, overload transformers, and otherwise do a whole lot of damage to the electricity grid. You don't want to wait until you wake up without power to start worrying about it though, so prepare right now with these tips.

Charge up your devices the night beforehand
If you've got a nice supply of laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices in your house, plug them in now and let them charge up as long as you can. Avoid using them unplugged tonight so you don't forget to plug them back in overnight, and make sure they're powered off (or saving battery in sleep mode) so they don't start draining as soon as the power dies.

Charge up those extra batteries
You probably can't run out and buy extra batteries right now, but if you've got some extra ones lying around, whether they be regular batteries or extended batteries, don't forget to charge those up, too. We all know how much today's smartphones drain battery, so you'll need all the juice you can get.

Dig out your old phones
Chances are, you've got at least one or two (if not several) old phones buried in the basement. Dig out as many as you can find, and charge them up. If your smartphone dies early on in the day, you'll want other phones you can rely on?even if they're just regular feature phones. Lots of us have ditched our landlines, but if you need something in case of an emergency, that old beat up Motorola RAZR is the perfect candidate. Remember that most cellphones can still make emergency calls even if you don't pay for service, and if you can swap your SIM card from your current phone, it's easy to transfer your current service to an old device.

Get the most out of your battery life
No matter what kind of device you have, chances are you can do some optimizing to make that battery last longer. Dim your screen, turn off Bluetooth and other non-essential apps or hardware, and put it to sleep whenever you're not using it. For more device-centric tips, check out our guides to extending the battery life of your Windows laptop, Linux laptop, an Android phone or any other smartphone. You can even eke a few more minutes out of your battery by using the right browser and turning off Flash completely.

Use your car as a phone charger when you really need it
It's not the ideal solution, but if your phone dies and you need one on hand for emergency calls, you can always whip out your car charger and start up your car for a few minutes of charging (you know, if your car will even start). You'll be patting yourself on the back for buying that USB car charger right about now.

Preparing for an Internet outage
Even if your power doesn't go out, your ISP might lose service in the midst of the onslaught (it's happened to a few of us at team Lifehacker during previous storms). If they do, here are your options as far as staying connected.

Tether your phone
It's one of the most tried and true methods for getting wireless Internet, and while it certainly won't provide a connection for the entire day, it can help you get any important work done before enjoying the rest of your snow day. If you're rocking an Android phone, you have quite a few choices, both if you've rooted and if you haven't.

If you're an iPhone user and you haven't paid for tethering from AT&T, you'll have to jailbreak and use previously mentionedMyWi. Note that if you wake up without Internet, you won't be able to jailbreak tomorrow ? so if it's important enough to you, maybe tonight's the night to back up your phone and check out redsn0w. Also note that tethering will drain your battery like crazy, so use your Internet wisely during the few precious moments you have. (That means no Facebook, you guys! It's just going to be full of the same Snowpocalypse statuses anyways).

Rent that movie from iTunes ? just this once ? because Netflix'll be down
You may forget from time to time that Netflix and other similar streaming services actually rely on a stable Internet connection, so when you go to enjoy your day off tomorrow, you might be disappointed to realize you've lost your entire queue. Now would be a good time to check out iTunes' rental system, or something similar. You may not like that whole paying part, but you have to do the best you can with what you've got, right?

Check and see if you're the only oneJust because you've lost power or Internet doesn't mean everyone has. If you've got a Starbucks, McDonalds, or other Wi-Fi plentiful chain near your house, you can always head there to get some work done (you know, if you can even get out of the house). Make sure you've got a car-friendly driveway, too?if you're out of salt, there are a lot of other household items that'll melt that ice, too.If your cell service goes out (or your phone runs out of juice)If your cell goes dead, on either the battery or service side, and you lack for a fall-back landline, you've still got options?especially if your web connection is still active, or you've got another Internet source.

Best option: Google Voice & Gmail calling
If you've already signed up to use Google Voice, you can make free calls from Gmail's chat sidebar. Just sign into Gmail, hit the "+" button to expand chat if it's not already expanded, and click the "Call phone" option. You may need to download a plug-in to get calling working; it might be a good move to already have it installed the night before a big storm hits.

Once the plug-in is installed, you're good to go, and if you use Android or otherwise have your Google Contacts set up, you won't even need to remember your boss' phone number. You'll be using your laptop speakers and tiny mic hole by default; it would be handy to have a USB headset handy, or at least a pair of headphones to prevent echoing and feedback.

Skype out
If you aren't a Google Voice user, the best you can do is a VoIP service like Skype, which lets you call regular phones right from your computer. Of course, if your friends or relatives have Skype, you can call them for free, but if you need to call other people's regular old phones, you'll need to shell out a bit for a SkypeOut number. What's nice, though, is that you can pay as you go?so if you just need a SkypeOut number for the Snowpocalypse, you don't have to subscribe to a monthly plan or anything like that. Check out Skype's pricing plans for more information.

Accept your tech-free day as the gift of productivity
Computers and the Internet are great tools, but they're also great distractions. If you lose your Internet connection, or your power altogether, you may prefer to think of it not as a curse, but a productivity blessing. There are a lot of Internet-free ways you can catch up with work, like going over your to-do list, organizing your files and folders, or even getting some real, distraction-free work done. It might even inspire you to disconnect more often.

Car bombs in Shi'ite areas of Iraq kill 34

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Five car bombs killed at least 34 people in Shi'ite areas of Iraq on Friday, police and medics said, as sectarian and ethnic tensions intensify ahead of provincial elections in April.

Two car bombs were detonated simultaneously at a bus stop near a Friday street market selling birds and other pets in the Shi'ite district of Kadhimiya in Baghdad, killing at least 16 people and wounding another 44, police and hospital sources said.

Footage of the scene showed dozens of buses and taxis destroyed by the explosion and blood on the ground.

Ongoing violence following the withdrawal of U.S. troops in late 2011 is stoking fears of a return to the sectarian strife that killed tens of thousands of Iraqis in 2006 and 2007.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shi'ite, is facing mass protests by disenchanted Sunni Muslims and is at loggerheads with ethnic Kurds who run their northern region autonomously from Baghdad.

The prospect of the election is hardening the divisions as political leaders appeal to their constituencies with often hostile rhetoric that rejects compromise.

In the Shi'ite city of Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, 15 people were killed in two car bomb explosions at a vegetable market.

"I was shopping when I heard the first explosion. I was scared and tried to reach my car to run away but before I got in the second explosion went off," said Habib al-Murshidi who was at the scene.

"I saw many people, women and old men lying on the ground which was covered with blood and scattered fruit and vegetables".

Another three people were killed by a parked car bomb in Kerbala, 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Baghdad, police said.

Thousands of Sunni Muslims have taken to the streets since late December in protest at what they see as the marginalization of their sect since the fall of Saddam Hussein and the empowerment of Iraq's Shi'ite majority through the ballot box.

The demonstrations in the Sunni heartland of Anbar are also compounding fears that war in neighboring Syria, where Sunni rebels are fighting to topple a leader backed by Shi'ite Iran, could further upset Iraq's own delicate sectarian and ethnic balance.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks on Friday.

Iraq is home to several Sunni insurgent groups that have carried out at least one high-casualty attack a month since the U.S. withdrawal. They include a local branch of al Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq, which often targets Shi'ites, seeking to reignite sectarian strife.

On Monday, a suicide bomber attacked a government-backed militia in Taji, killing at least 22 people -- the seventh of eight suicide bombings in Iraq over the past month alone.

"De-Flame" Onions with Boiling Water

"De-Flame" Onions with Boiling WaterBefore you add onions to salsa or guacamole, it's a good idea to tone down the intense flavor, lest your dip be overwhelmed. A simple and quick way to do that, according to chef Rick Bayless, is to pour boiling water over the chopped onions.

That's pretty much all you need to know. This step makes the onions much mellower and is an easy alternative to sauteing onions in a pan for 10 minutes to take the "flame" out of them.

This is one out of seven cooking tips from chefs posted in the Bon Appetit article below.

Three-quarters of people reach for iPads after being intimate

Wilson Rothman / NBC News

By Rosa Golijan

Even as someone who has been at the receiving end of the "I can't believe you are reaching for your phone right now!" glare once or twice?? in the last 24 hours alone?? I still couldn't help but cringe when I heard that 74 percent of people find it acceptable to reach for their iPads right after, ahem, being intimate with someone.

Have our gadget addictions really gotten to this point?

The statistic comes from a survey commissioned by accessory maker Logitech. A firm called Wakefield Research conducted the survey, interviewing 2,000 single adults over the age of 18 in the U.S., the U.K., Germany and France.

The survey revealed that 43 percent of single U.S.-based respondents would be equally?upset about breaking their iPads as they would be about breaking up with a significant other. (Compare that to 27 percent of the German respondents. Guess they're more romantic.) Hang on though! It gets even worse: Over a third of the U.S.-based respondents?? 37 percent, if you want to be precise?? said that they would rather spend the "morning after" a date with their iPads rather than, well, the prior night's date.

Of course, according to the same survey, 93 percent of the U.S.-based respondents use their tablets in bed, in general. And 27 percent even admit that they've managed to damage a tablet or smartphone while being naughty with a partner. We'll leave the rest of that detail to the imagination or file it in the "TMI" category for now.
