Israel said to ease restrictions on Gaza fishing and farming

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel eased restrictions on Gaza fishermen on Saturday, further implementing a three-day-old truce brokered by Egypt after a week of fierce fighting, Palestinian officials said.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children headed back to school for the first time in 10 days, in another indication normal life was returning after cross-border violence in which 166 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed.

A statement from the office of Hamas Islamist Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said Egypt had notified them that "Israel has allowed Palestinian fishermen to fish in Gaza's waters at a distance of six miles, up from three miles".

Israel had no immediate comment.

A text of the truce deal agreed on Wednesday calls on Israel to ease curbs on the coastal Gaza territory, which it has largely blockaded since Hamas, which rejects the Jewish state's right to exist, took power there in 2007.

The sides had disagreed on exactly when and how the restrictions would actually be lifted.

Israel had formally barred Gaza fishermen from heading more than three miles out into the Mediterranean Sea for about three years, its gunboats often enforcing the rule. It said its blockade was a measure to prevent weapons smuggling.

Murad Al-Issi, a member of a local fishermens' group, told Reuters his colleagues had already ventured out to the six-mile limit on Saturday, undisturbed by Israel.

"The Israeli army naval boat which used to fire and torch Palestinian boats that sailed beyond a three-mile distance watched without doing anything to prevent them," Issi said.

Palestinians say the Israeli restrictions had hampered the amount and variety of fish they could catch.

"This is a good step," Issi said, adding it would be best to be permitted double the distance.

In another apparent Israeli step to ease restrictions, Palestinian farmers tended land along the testy frontier with the Jewish state without incident, a day after Israeli troops killed a Palestinian man at a border fence.

Palestinians denounced the shooting as a violation of the ceasefire and Egypt intervened to restore calm.

On Saturday, a Reuters photographer saw farmers in the Khan Younis area working close to the Israeli frontier fence.

Hamas security officials were on patrol and Israeli soldiers looked on without interfering, but for a brief verbal exchange between one soldier and a Hamas guard, witnesses said.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment.

Israel had barred Palestinians from coming within 300 meters of the border since 2009, citing security concerns.

Guest Post: Getting Schooled on Developing the Best Games for ...

Editor?s note: The following guest post was written by?Peter Hofstede, the Game Development Director at Spil Games. Spil is billed as the largest independent online gaming platform. As the social games market grows more crowded, developers find themselves competing more and more for audience share. One group that hasn?t been targeted by most studios are in the tween demographic, an audience that Spil?s found success with via its Girls Go Games label. In this article, Hofstede offers advice on how to find success with tweens.

There are over 80 million social games played each day, yet only 15 percent of these games are played more than once by a user. We?re seeing a high level of abandonment in the social gaming space, but keep in mind that many of these games are developed for mass audiences? where it?s very difficult to please everyone. At Spil Games, we prefer to operate in a world where tailoring gaming experiences to niche audiences is an ideal way to reach an engaged consumer base and convert them into loyal users.

Thinking specifically about tween girls, teenage boys or even parents looking to play online games with their kids, developing games for niche audiences can provide a major growth opportunity. If fact, 91 percent of kids are gamers ? we know the market is there ? it?s simply a matter harnessing these consumers to get them to play your game. When it comes to success, it is crucial for developers to incorporate a user-centered design approach to appeal to niche audiences? unique interests and behaviors. Getting it right doesn?t require a PhD in psychology, and while it certainly couldn?t hurt, there are several different tactics to understanding the basics throughout the game development process.

I think of it as a three-step design approach:

1. Understand the psychological foundations of the audience for which you are developing.

2. Use focus groups to double-check your findings

3. Validate your game by testing it on real users.

Let?s dive deeper ?

I. Open your Textbooks: Psych 101

Before you can get into your audiences? hands, first things first: Get inside their heads. Specific to the teen and tween demographic, it?s essential to know the basic psychology behind these players so that they will find your game content engaging. In other words: Don?t trust your own ?grown up? intuition. The psychology behind gameplay is fascinating to read up on. The incorporation of psychological phenomena, such as a positive feedback loop (continuing an action or behavior because of the reoccurring positive outcome,) for example, has been shown to influence gaming behavior by extending average length of play and recurring gameplay.

It is also important to examine gender differences when developing games to niche audiences. We find that there are many game components that motivate kids in general, but we also see that boys and girls tend to be motivated by different aspects of games, especially for players that fall between the ages of 6-12. For example, younger teenage boys prefer games that are extreme, with winners and losers, and an overtly competitive component where they can clearly show off results.

Tween girls like competition as well, but are also interested in non-competitive gameplay that helps them to develop self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. Tween girls are also at an age where they are eager to act out different roles they see exhibited in their daily lives. Understanding that they see their daily role models (parents, older siblings, etc.) duties like feeding household pets and being held accountable for a fulltime job could all translate into successful online game themes.

II. Pop Quiz: Implementing Checklists and Focus Groups in Game Creation

Of course, not everything can be learned from textbooks, or rather, initial psychological or behavioral research. It is just as important to incorporate a human component to the development process by taking a look at focus group reactions, survey findings and direct feedback from niche audiences into making a game as awesome as possible.

In this phase of the game development process, think of your gamers as co-developers, aiding you in fully baking out the perfect game. Surveys and focus groups are the perfect way to test out a brand new game or character and see a small-scale perspective of how your audience will react.

A great focus group example is when we were tasked to rebrand and update a character in one of our staple franchises. The goal was to modernize the female chef character of a cooking game. After several focus groups in Europe, working with hundreds of tween gamers and their parents to determine their thoughts and reactions to the chef character, we ended up fully revamping her wardrobe, hair and makeup to appeal to these tween girls and their parents.

III. Physical Education: Designing User-Interface around Niche Audience?s Anatomy

In phase three of the game development process, that is, having real gamers play completed games in the lab, we have found an essential aspect of developing a game is all too easily forgotten: audience specific usability issues. For instance, with little gamers come little fingers. As a developer, we need to make sure that we are not only creating games kids will love, but also making sure that they can actually play them. The size of these gamers? hands and fingers directly impact the way they type, hold a mouse and play games on a smartphone or ? minor details which can ultimately impact whether a kid loves your game, or wants to throw their dad?s smartphone out the car window!

Specifically, our usability tests reveal several findings. One demonstrated younger kids find holding a tablet device to be very difficult for their little hands. In an attempt to grasp the tablet, the children often accidentally touch the screen with their fingers, which impacts the game controls. Developers can implement more forgiving touch systems to combat this issue, for example by placing the finger closest to a button or active region in control and have all other finger pressure ignored.

Graduation:

We are witnessing a very exciting time for the gaming space but for a developer to survive in this highly populated world, it is essential to take the necessary steps to understand audience behavior. Understanding specific audience preferences and behavior can not only instill confidence in a game?s success post-development, but also help developers allocate resources appropriately throughout the entire process. Developers can use data from focus groups and usability tests to prioritize what to spend the most time on during the creation process. There?s no need to spend hours refining certain animation details if you know your target audience cares more about the potential ways they can customize the game. There are plenty of hit games yet to be developed, we just need to make sure to hone in on the most applicable aspects to incorporate, so that awesome games can reach audiences effectively and start earning return.

Restaurant mogul George Schenk melds the needs of people, planet, and profits

Serving nutritious food, following ecological principles, and helping his community in Vermont make George Schenk a businessman with a social conscience.

By Mike Ives,?Correspondent / November 23, 2012

George Schenk founded American Flatbread pizza as a way to showcase local produce and advocate for both community and global causes.

In the fall of 1979, George Schenk stuffed all his worldly possessions into his pickup truck and moved from upstate New York to central Vermont. After settling in the sleepy ski town of Waitsfield, he began working as a dishwasher, freelance photographer, and live-in baby sitter.

He also apprenticed at local restaurants and learned from chefs who were cooking in ways that emphasized local and regional ingredients. By 1985, Mr. Schenk was selling his own "flatbread," a variation on the brick oven-style pizza he'd eaten as a teenager, topped with Vermont produce.

Serving nutritious food, he realized, was a good way to promote the kind of community values he'd absorbed in his Connecticut childhood and the ecological principles he'd embraced in his previous careers as a farmer and forester.

"I felt as though the environmental dimension of food needed a voice," Schenk recalls. Today, American Flatbread operates three popular Vermont locations, exports frozen pizzas nationwide, and is franchising its restaurant concept in other states.

But profit isn't Schenk's only priority: For more than two decades he has donated thousands of his flatbreads to the poor and sick. He's also held an average of eight benefit bakes each year to raise money for those in need, from the Boy Scouts in Vermont to earthquake victims in Haiti. He also serves on the boards of several nonprofit groups and promotes grass-roots causes by staging public events at his flagship restaurant.

Although Schenk's unorthodox, off-the-cuff style sometimes stirs controversy, friends and advocates say he is an uncommonly generous man who's willing to risk his reputation to stand by his convictions.

Schenk's career perfectly illustrates the "triple bottom line" business philosophy of social entrepreneurs who place equal emphasis on people, planet, and profits, says Enid Wonnacott, executive director of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont. "It really came from a very loving, big-hearted place," she says of his early work establishing American Flatbread. "He didn't think it was going to make him rich."

American Flatbread restaurants have a family-friendly atmosphere featuring a wood-fired oven and gingham-checked tablecloths ? and a mission that promotes tolerance, social justice, and environmental sustainability. Each week Schenk writes a dedication for his menus that explores issues of the day, and he often ponders the teachings of ancient philosophers.

The flatbread is occasionally served with political overtones. In December 2002, for example, it was baked with salt harvested from the Dead Sea ? half in Israel, half in Jordan. And in December 2009 it was topped with Afghan saffron as a gesture of support for Afghan poppy farmers trying to find alternatives to the opium trade.

Schenk's aim is to stretch customers' minds but not alienate them, he says. "When we do things that cross political lines and social barriers, we can open doors that lead to places we can't predict," he said recently in an interview at his log cabin overlooking Vermont's Green Mountains. "That is how we improve understanding of one another."

Schenk often leverages his prominence as a businessman to take public stands on issues ranging from nuclear waste to agricultural policy. He doesn't employ a fixed strategy, he says, but typically pens an opinion article in Vermont's largest newspaper, The Burlington Free Press, and later stages a benefit bake or public event to promote conversations and activism.

A prime example is an informal campaign he started in 1998 to bring local food into public schools. After writing an opinion article that stressed a lack of connection between local farms and school cafeterias, he held a benefit bake and donated the proceeds (about $800) to schools in Vermont's Mad River Valley. He's repeated the event every year since.

Stone Soup for Thanksgiving: understanding bird disease through citizen science

[caption id="attachment_4861" align="alignright" width="448" caption="Windowkill. Photo: Susan Spear"] [/caption]

When somebody opens their front door to pick up the morning newspaper and sees a dead bird below their hedge, they get curious for answers. As soon as they stoop down for a closer look, an Indiana Jones adventure unfolds within the confines of their backyard. Was it poison, disease, predation, starvation, old age? Is this a fluke or widespread plague? Perhaps dead birds like this one are widely scattered across a country. But, if so, what sort of scientific method could find answers to what happened to them all? The stone soup method. In my favorite version of the folk story "Stone Soup," a group of monks traveling through the war-torn countryside sit in the center of a quiet village and boil a stone in a large pot of water. Soon curiosity wins over the initial distrust and skepticism of impoverished villagers as each, in turn, are enticed to add a vegetable or spice. Through cooperation and sharing, the entire village feasts on delicious, nutritious soup. When my colleagues and I carry out research using citizen science methods, we are like the monks boiling stone soup. Instead of a pot, we have a big blank spreadsheet and curious folk are enticed to each add their observations, ultimately creating a robust database with observations from across a continent. Through citizen science I study healthy birds, but several of my colleagues focus on the sick and dying ones. This week in PLOS ONE, a research team led by Becki Lawson, a veterinarian and ecologist, reported a new strain of avian pox spreading in a common backyard bird in Great Britain. Citizen science participation was pivotal to tracking the outbreak, unraveling its mysteries, and informing localized studies. The new strain of avian pox entered Great Britain and spread in one family of birds, the Paridae. The Paridae include chickadees in North America, their European counterparts are various types of tits, most notably the Great Tit. By piecing together reports from citizen science participants, the team was able to track the spread of pox, starting in southeast England, moving to central England, and then into Wales in less than five years. Avian pox is not for the squeamish, so this study is a testament to what citizen scientists are willing to do. Birds with avian pox grow red, yellow, or gray wart-like lesions, particularly around the eyes, beak, and legs. The new strain makes really large lesions, so severe that they leave the bird unable to feed itself or look out for predators. The pox spreads from individual to individual through direct contact, indirect contact (like touching the same bird feeder), or through a vector that bites, like mosquitoes. There is no way to treat wild birds medically. When an outbreak occurs, people are advised to remove bird feeders to prevent birds from congregating. Also, the study is a reminder for people to periodically clean and sanitize wild bird feeders, just as you would with pets. There are numerous causes of bird deaths in Great Britain. I get the shivers from the names, such as the bacteria like salmonellosis, colibacillosis, Suttonella ornithocola, and Chlamydia psittaci, viruses like pox and fringilla papilloma, and parasites, like trichomonosis, cnemidocoptiasis, and syngamiasis. People have found birds with all of these infectious diseases in over 60 species since 2005 because thousands of individuals have followed hygienic protocols to pick up, package, and submit over 2,500 dead birds to designated veterinary labs for post mortem exams. The veterinary labs participate in the Garden Bird Health initiative (GBHi), a highly collaborative research project to investigate causes of sickness and death in British garden birds. Researchers at the Zoological Society of London collate information from two citizen science projects. First, they receive ad hoc reports, typically through the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Second, Garden BirdWatch, run by the British Trust for Ornithology, formed a systematic surveillance system in which participants provided information every week throughout the year (not just when sick or dead birds are found). Over the past few year Brits were alert and tracking the spread of this pox virus. Two years ago they also followed an epidemic of parasitic finch trichomonosis that caused a significant decline in British greenfinch populations, in research also led by Becki Lawson. The parasitic epidemic spread from the UK to the rest of Europe. The current viral pox epidemic turned the tables: this epidemic is likely invading the UK from Europe. Great Tits don't migrate, so the new strain of pox had to arrive some other way. Working in coordination with the national efforts, ornithologists from the University of Oxford confirmed that the Great Tit was more susceptible than other species. Although the avian pox has severe effects on individual birds, in particular lowering the odds of survival for chicks and juvenile birds, researchers do not anticipate population declines as occurred with the greenfinch. In the US, citizen scientists are helping study disease and death in birds, too. The House Finch Disease Survey, which is a project by Andr? Dhondt, my colleague (and supervisor) at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, has tracked an epidemic of conjunctivitis, spread by bacteria. Like pox, people can typically see the symptoms of conjunctivitis in house finches, mainly red swollen and crusty eyes, like pink eye in our children. In the Pacific Northwest, hundreds of people help monitor marine health as they take long walks on the beach. They have counted thousands of dead (beached) sea birds each year and submitted their observations to my colleague Julia Parrish through the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST). These baseline numbers are important. Unless people are paying attention, we won't notice if there is a sudden uptick in deaths, or be able to properly estimate the impact of a catastrophe, such as an oil spill. There are plenty of misconceptions about citizen science, largely attributed to its dual achievements: public engagement and academic research. Is the purpose of making stone soup to teach people about cooperation or to produce a good meal? The intent doesn't matter because the stone soup method achieves both. Likewise, citizen science can woo everyday people into falling in love with science AND co-create knowledge that an individual scientist could not acquire alone. Fast and furious: intensity is the key to health and fitness | Cycling Tips

Fast and furious: intensity is the key to health and fitness

Less than 40% of Australians achieve the minimum amount of physical activity recommended by government and professional organisations. This contributes to the fact 60% of Australians are overweight or obese.

Exercise and Sports Science Australia (and similar organisations overseas) recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise most days of the week, adding up to 150 minutes a week.

The most commonly reported barrier to reaching these targets is a perceived lack of time. So it?s important to maximise the benefits of exercise in what little spare time we have.

But how can we get the most out of our exercise sessions? And is there a way to get enough exercise to stay healthy without spending 150 minutes a week?

HIIT it

Over the past few years, a number of laboratories have shown that High Intensity Interval Training (commonly known as HIIT) can provide similar ? if not greater ? health and fitness benefits as traditional exercise approaches. HIIT incorporates repeated bursts of intense exercise interspersed with periods of rest.

But it should be pointed out that, while HIIT is likely to improve overall metabolism, when it comes to fat burning and blood glucose control with minimal weight loss, calorie restriction through dieting is still the best way to lose body weight.

Most HIIT studies are performed on a bike, although some of the aerobic studies have been performed on a treadmill. Essentially, from the exerciser?s point of view, it shouldn?t matter, as long as the intensity is achieved.

Research has so far focused on three HIIT variations:

Low-volume supra-maximal HIIT

Low-volume supra-maximal HIIT involves four to six repetitions of 30 seconds of all-out exercise (approximately four times greater than maximum aerobic exercise intensity) with recovery periods of around four minutes.

The advantage of this approach is the small time commitment required. Clear benefits in terms of aerobic fitness and insulin sensitivity have been observed with just nine minutes of exercise a week (or 90 minutes total time commitment when you include rest).

But this method of training typically involves specialised equipment (such as electromagnetically braked stationary lab bikes) and due to the very high exertion and motivation required it may not be feasible for the general population.

Aerobic HIIT

Aerobic HIIT sessions on the other hand typically involve four to six four-minute repetitions of exercise performed at 80-90% of the maximum aerobic exercise intensity. These efforts are interspersed with one to three minutes of recovery with a single session taking up to 38 minutes.

As this is a lower intensity than the supra-maximal HIIT, it is deemed more achievable and has repeatedly been used successfully to treat patients with metabolic syndrome, hypertension and coronary artery disease.

But as the aerobic HIIT sessions are somewhat prolonged it doesn?t offer the same time-saving advantages as supra-maximal HIIT.

Low-volume maximal HIIT

Low-volume maximal HIIT sessions may provide a compromise between the previous two protocols.

This strategy involves eight to ten one-minute bouts performed at maximal aerobic exercise capacity, interspersed with 60-75 seconds of light recovery, therefore offering significant time advantages, with a single session taking around 20 minutes.

Therefore its lower intensity (compared to supra-maximal HIIT) and shorter session duration (compared to aerobic HIIT) may make it suitable for sedentary or obese people, and those with existing metabolic conditions.

This form of HIIT has already been trialled successfully in type 2 diabetes patients, who demonstrated markedly improved blood-sugar control in just two weeks.

How low can you go?

We still don?t really know the minimum amount of exercise required to induce significant health and fitness benefits. But a recent study has cut down the exercise time even further, showing that just six ten-second all-out sprints, spread throughout a week can improve aerobic fitness and blood-sugar control.

Evidence is building that the HIIT approach to exercise can substantially improve aerobic fitness while providing a range of positive health outcomes, including better blood-sugar control, blood pressure and blood vessel function in a range of conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes and heart disease.

These studies have challenged current thinking regarding how much exercise is needed to produce substantial health benefits. This has important implications for those who decide a 20-minute lunch break is insufficient for worthwhile exercise, or for those looking to make the most of their precious gym time.

Mass participation

Meanwhile, exercise physiologists and healthcare providers are keenly awaiting much-needed, large scale randomised control trials on HIIT to be funded and carried out.

Those studies will give us the evidence to challenge current exercise recommendations and allow the incorporation of HIIT into the standard recommendations needed to treat and prevent chronic metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in the future.

While exercise preferences no doubt vary among individuals, and HIIT may not appeal to everyone, HIIT offers a solution for those with little time to be active.

Technology in Education - High School Homeschooling

My friend is one of those people who believe that we overuse technology. While he is not intrinsically a Neo-Luddite, he definitely believes that technology has made us both inefficient and lazy. Of course, I disagree.

Technology in education, when used appropriately, can increase retention across the spectrum. Through its ability to display information in various ways, technology has the ability to create engaged and lifelong learners. For some subjects, such as language, technology can be a particularly great asset. If we look at the technologies of mobile devices and the Internet alone, we can see just how much of an impact technology can have on retention. Ultimately, we can use these tools to introduce us to a type of active learning that will make us forget we are learning and make even the most anti-grammar language learners enjoy what they are learning.

Digital Tool #1: Online Books

?It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.? This quote is taken from Pride and Prejudice?which is just one of the many books available online. This book and other classics are usually out of copyright and are available for free or for a very small cost (less than $5). The classics are full of great vocabulary, interesting plots, and perfect grammar. Because they are digital, they can be taken anywhere and added to almost any mobile device. Great online bookstores include Project Gutenberg, Amazon (free Kindle application), and Google Books.

Digital Tool #2: Apps

Finding great digital books brings me to another great digital tool?apps (applications). Mobile apps, in particular, allow you to set up alerts, play games, and have a daily reminder of new words. On the Android and Apple app market alone, there are more than fifty apps that can be used for vocabulary and grammar enhancement (such as flashcard apps, word games, and reference tools).

Perhaps the best tool to use with a physical or digital book is a mobile dictionary. A great one to use is the Merriam-Webster Dictionary App. This app makes it incredibly easy to look up a word, includes audio pronunciation, and alerts you with a new word to learn each day. If you are reading the classics, or just come across a word you don?t know, this app is extremely handy.

Digital Tool #3: Google

Another great tool for vocabulary is Google. When hearing or learning a new word, such as a word of the day, retention will come best when that word is placed in context that is memorable. When using Google search, you have the ability to search news stories, blogs, and Google Scholar, and you also can set the reading level of your results to pages that have advanced vocabulary. Searching news stories and blogs helps with learning the word in context, as the learner can observe how the word is used within text that interests him or her. Google Scholar (and the search reading level) not only can help a person learn the new word, but it also can help augment vocabulary with highly academic language and improve reading comprehension.

Digital Tool #4: Podcasts

Finally, let?s talk about podcasts. A podcast is a short audio program that can be played anywhere. Have an extra fifteen minutes in the car? How about turning on Grammar Girl? Grammar Girl is a podcast that highlights individual grammar concepts and discusses each one in a fun and lively manner?definitely a must-have for anyone learning or re-learning grammar.

Many other grammar and vocabulary resources are available online, ranging from games to etymology dictionaries to videos explaining parts of speech. Technology can definitely be useful, and with the world at our fingertips, we have more ability than ever before to learn, grow, and be engaged.

Gap raises outlook after stronger 3rd quarter

NEW YORK (AP) ? Gap Inc. raised its outlook for the year after reporting bigger third-quarter net income that beat Wall Street expectations on Thursday.

The San Francisco-based clothing retailer said an uptick in sales at its Banana Republic, Old Navy and namesake stores helped lift its net income by 60 percent for the period. The performance is the latest sign that the company may be in turnaround mode, fueled by strong marketing and a revamping of its products.

CEO Glenn Murphy said in a conference call with analysts that Gap was continuing its transformation from an "American-centric" company to more of a global brand. For example, the company opened its first Gap Outlet store in China and an online business in Japan during the quarter.

Last month, Gap also announced a management overhaul aimed at enabling it to respond more quickly to changing tastes around the world. The change, to take effect in February, will put the North American, international, online, outlet and franchise divisions under a single global executive for each of the company's brands. The company is also forming a new innovation and digital strategy team to further advance its efforts in that area.

For the quarter, the company said revenue at stores open at least a year for the period rose 6 percent in North America. The figure is a key measure of a retailer's health, because it excludes the volatility of newly opened and closed locations. The figure rose 7 percent at Gap, 6 percent for Banana Republic and 9 percent for Old Navy, after each of the brands logged declines in the year-ago period.

Net sales for the online division rose by 23 percent to $509 million. International sales rose by 7 percent.

Murphy said the results highlight how its lineup is resonating with customers.

"We are ready to compete and win this holiday season as we drive to build upon our top line growth," Murphy said.

For the three months ended Oct. 27, the company said it earned $308 million, or 63 cents per share. That's compared with $193 million, or 38 cents per share, in the year-ago period. The per-share results got a 2-cent boost from a reduction in the number of outstanding shares.

Total revenue rose 8 percent to $3.86 billion, from $3.59 billion last year.

Analysts, on average, expected a profit of 62 cents per share, on revenue of $3.84 billion, according to FactSet.

The company now expects earnings per share of $2.20 to $2.25 for the full year, up from the previous forecast of $1.95 to $2 per share. Wall Street was forecasting $2.25 per share, on average, with estimates ranging from $1.85 to $2.38.

Gap shares rose $1.22, or 3.7 percent, to $34.48 in after-hours trading.

Preterm birth may be prevented with a few proven treatments, experts say

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? Lowering preterm birth rates by an average of 5 percent across 39 high-resource countries, including the United States, by 2015 would prevent prematurity for 58,000 babies a year, a group of international experts said on November 15.

In an article published in The Lancet to coincide with the second annual World Prematurity Day, the expert group says prevention of preterm birth also could save billions in economic costs.

"Governments and health professionals in these 39 countries need to know that wider use of proven interventions can help more women have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies," says lead author Hannah H. Chang, M.D., PhD, a consultant for The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). "A 5 percent reduction in the preterm birth rate is an important first step."

"The preterm birth rate in the U.S. currently is on the decline, but for this trend to continue, it's critical that high-resource countries such as ours focus vigorously on prevention," says Christopher Howson, PhD, vice president of Global Programs for the March of Dimes, a co-author.

The authors of The Lancet article say that five proven interventions, when combined, would lower the preterm rate across 39 countries from an average 9.6 percent of live births to 9.1 percent, and save about $3 billion in health and economic costs:

? eliminating early cesarean deliveries and inductions of labor unless medically necessary;

? decreasing multiple embryo transfers during assisted reproductive technologies;

? helping women quit smoking;

? providing progesterone supplementation to women with high risk pregnancies;

? cervical cerclage for high-risk women with short cervix.

"The means to reduce the risk of preterm birth by 5 percent are already available," says Catherine Y. Spong, M.D., Associate Director for Extramural Research, Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. "Continued research into the causes of preterm birth has the potential to reduce the proportion of infants born preterm even further."

Preterm birth, birth before 37 weeks completed gestation, is the leading cause of newborn death, and babies who survive an early birth often face a lifetime of health challenges, including breathing problems, cerebral palsy, motor and intellectual disabilities and others.

Chucky Child's Play Video Game Cancelled After Failed Kickstarter

Posted: November 14, 2012

Chucky Child's Play Video Game Cancelled

Chucky the doll will not be haunting your PC or favorite gaming console any time soon. According to TrueAchievements, the video game ?Chucky: Wanna Play?? based?upon the horror movie series?Child?s Play? has been cancelled.

Back in May of 2011, TikGames announced they were working on bringing a?Child?s Play?video game to PC and consoles. The goal was for the player to take on the role of Chucky and go on a horror-inspired rampage.

Apparently, the developer studio had difficulty raising funding, which is not surprising considering there?s been a huge 25 percent drop in ?core games? sales this October. Many studios have been forced to lay off employees. According to phys.org, video game ?sales fell to $755.5 million from $1 billion a year earlier. Sales of video games themselves, excluding PC titles, fell 25 percent to $432.6 million. Sales of hardware such as Microsoft?s Xbox 360 fell 37 percent to $187.3 million. Sales of accessories, meanwhile, grew 5 percent to $135.6 million.?

Tikgames started an official?Kickstarter?in order to make up the budget shortfall, with their goal being to raise $925,000. This might seem like an unreasonable goal, but other independent video game developers have managed to raise millions through Kickstarter. Tikgames had an early demo of the Chucky: Wanna Play? video game but then required the money to finish it and port Chucky to consoles. Unfortunately, they only raised 19 backers and $585, which is a head-scratcher for such a name-brand. Apparently, news of this Chucky Kickstarter campaign never made it onto many of the major horror movie focused websites.

Tikgames made the Chucky cancellation official on its Facebook page:

?It is with great sadness that we announce the cancellation of this Kickstarter Campaign. For those who have followed Chucky this last week, you know that pledges have been very slow. We built a fun campaign with lots of great goodies, got the word out to as many people as we could, but sadly not enough people loved the concept of a Chucky video game as much as we did.?Our sincerest thanks go out to all of you who pledged to Chucky and we promise no charges will be made to your credit card for this Kickstarter project.?

Veterinarian Salary And Job Description | Vikipedio

veterinarianVeterinary Medicine is highly in demand today because of the increasing number of people who are gaining interest in having pets and those who invest ranches or farms. No matter how knowledgeable we are when it comes to caring for pets, no one comes close to the knowledge and expertise of someone who studied and trained long and hard about animal care, treatment, and the like. Veterinarians are animal doctors. They focus on treating certain animal medical conditions as well as give them checkups, vaccines, and provide tips for the owners on how to care for them.

Just like a Doctor of Medicine, Vets are required in almost any community especially in places where animals are abundant. Most pet owners rely on these doctors to make sure that their pets are healthy and free from any type of infection or disease. Farm and ranch owners, also, rely on these doctors to help them boost the quality of their cattle or livestock in order to boost business and provide food and other animal products to consumers. Aside from these typical tasks of a Veterinarian, there are other areas of expertise that they may choose from, there are other tasks that, unknown to many, are part of their jobs as well. Here is a glimpse of what to expect in the field of Veterinary Medicine.

Veterinarian Salary Information:

Another common factor between Physicians and Vets is the potential to earn a high salary. As of May 2010, the average income of a Veterinarian is $82,040 per year. This means that it could be higher or lower than that amount. The lowest 10 percent were able to receive a Veterinarian salary of $49,910 and lower while those who belong to the highest 10 percent got a Veterinarian pay of more than $145,230. The Veterinarian salary can still be higher depending on certain factors which affect it. The educational attainment, amount of experience, skills, and the type of employer are all elements that determine how much Veterinarian salary one can earn. Another factor is the type of specialty or specialization that one chooses to focus on. Those who deal with the Food Animal industry, which involves animals that are bred for food, get the highest Vet income of around $71,096. Those who choose to handle horses only get a yearly $43,405.

Veterinarian Education Requirements:

Regarding the process of learning to become a Veterinarian, it is highly recommended that an individual acquire a Bachelor?s Degree before applying for a Veterinary Medicine course. The Bachelor?s Degree is not required but it could give you a plus when applying for medical school. Schools that offer a degree in Veterinary Medicine prefer individuals who have completed several studies in various sciences such as Biology, Zoology, and more. Getting into any Veterinary Program is really tough, which is why it is important to have several credentials in order to meet their qualifications. A Doctor in Veterinary Medicine course usually takes 4 years to complete. The first 3 years include classroom training, laboratory, and clinical field work. The 4th year usually involves on -the-job training to gain practical experience. Vets are required to take the national license exam in order to be qualified for employment or to set up their own practice. Most states do not accept Vets who are licensed in other states so, before a Veterinarian can set up practice in a different state, they must take a state license exam in that particular location. If you plan to specialize in one or more veterinary specialties, you must train for it and get certified with it by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Veterinarian Job Description:

Basically, the Veterinarian job description involves a lot of tasks like examining animals, diagnosis, treatment, surgery, provision of vaccines and testing its effectiveness, operating medical equipment for use on animals, counsel owners on general care, illnesses, and treatment or medication, and to euthanize animals when necessary. They are also in charge of performing certain procedures like neuter and spay. There are several types of Veterinarians in specialized fields. There are Companion Animal Veterinarians, which deal with pets; Equine Veterinarians deal with horses; Food Animal Veterinarians who deal with farm animals; Food Safety and Inspection Veterinarians who handle the inspection of livestock and animal products; and Research Veterinarians who work mostly within a laboratory setting.

The need for Veterinarians is expected to increase to up to 36 percent from 2010 up to 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is because of the increasing number of the pet population. Also, more and more medical procedures are becoming available for animals. Therefore, pet owners demand Vets who are available to perform such treatment. If you have a deep passion for animals and love to work around them, then a career in Veterinary Medicine will surely be a great opportunity for you to earn money and do what you love most.

Canadian Natural Mama ~ Product Reviews: Midwifery Supply Shop ...

This Midwifery Supply shop is not only an amazing online shop, but an amazing wealth of resources and knowledge. When I first contacted Jill Colpitts about a review, I was extremely interested in water births and how to choose the best pool for an at home water birth. She wrote back and not only answered my questions but had a lot of great advice on a ton of things that I had not even thought of. Although I had previously had two births with midwives, I was not up on all there is to know about a water birth. I was naive and thought hmmm a water birth would be cool, all I need is one of those fancy pools, right?? She walked with me, outlining step by step on supplies I would need if I were going to buy a pool, and what to look for if I was to rent a pool myself.

Btw, she suggests her site's best seller the Aquaborn Eco Birth Pool - Professional

With the five use warranty this pool offers, it can be easily shared with other moms so you can get the most bang for your buck. Just don't try all birthing at the same time... that could get a bit crowded ;) Who is Jill Colpitts, and why should you trust her opinion over your neighbor's best friend's mother's sister's daughter who once had a home birth?? Well, Jill not only represents Midwifery Supplies Canada, but also Mama Goddess Birth Shop and Safe Beginnings First Aid. To quote her site, she is, "a CPR/first aid instructor, DONA certified doula, and a general birth enthusiast".That is definitely someone that I would want in my birthing corner, that's for sure!! If you have any questions about birthing she is your girl! A great doula can definitely be a pregnant and postpartum woman's best friend that's for sure. The product that she did recommend I try is a cool little device called the Elle TENS Machine.
Besides looking like a really cool remote control, this crazy little thing can be used for back-aches, tension headaches, etc from 37 weeks and beyond. Since Cupcake (#2 baby) came so quickly my lower back was beyond messed up and was constantly giving me pain all throughout my pregnancy with number three. Sometimes just getting out of bed to pee in the middle of the night had me feeling like a 78 year old woman. I had never heard of a TENS machine before and was curious to see if it could help. Jill informed me that the more you use your TENS machine, the more effective it will be for labor. You can even use it in post-partum recovery, even if you have had a c-section. I was intrigued. One of the best parts of this device is that it can also be covered by many extended benefits plans with a simple prescription. If only I had have found out about this with baby #2, I wonder how my back pain would have been...

What is a TENS machine and what exactly does TENS even stand for?? TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. The Canada Childbirth TENS website explains it in this way: ? "The TENS is a small, lightweight unit. Leading out of the unit are 4 small wires that attach to 4 self adhesive pads, these pads are applied to the back and small electrical pulses pass through them. The electrical pulses stimulate nerve cells that partially block the pain signals from the uterus and cervix from reaching the brain, it also stimulates the brain to produce its own pain relieving substances called endorphins. The TENS unit has a booster button to temporally increase the intensity of the pulses during contractions." ?The Elle TENS machine can easily be used, and comes with a easy to read instruction book, plus one complete set of electrodes. It is recommended however, that if you are wanting to share this machine with your partner, or family member, that they purchase their own set of electrodes for hygienic reasons. All of the settings are pre-set so there is no fumbling around with the buttons trying to find the perfect setting. I must admit, the first time I was all hooked up to the electrodes I felt a bit like a scientific experiment. I had no idea what to expect. Basically what happens is that you get these sticky pads all hooked up on your back/shoulder/wherever, and then get plugged into the hand held device. The device comes with a cord so you can wear it around your neck for portablity, too. You select your mode based on how strong and close together you need the pulses. Optimax Technology gives an extra reserve of power for when you really need it. I can see how the more you use it, the more helpful it would be during labor. The pulses help to raise the level of your own pain relieving chemicals known as endorphins and block pain signals from reaching the brain.

The Elle TENS machine differs from a regular TENS machine, in the way that it has been tested and is safe for pregnancy. Do not use a regular TENS machine during pregnancy. Though I used the Elle TENS machine from weeks 36 on, I did not actually get to use it for my actual labor. Sad face. I just was so in denial I was actually in labor, and walking around my house chasing kids etc. that really there was no time to think of it. Whoops. I did however have a water birth at home... in the bath tub, which confuses my son. "But mommy how did you KNOW that the baby was going to want to come in the bath tub??" The times that I did use the Elle TENS, I was actually pleasantly surprised with how it did affect my lower back pain for the better. I suffer from terrible shoulder pain from old rugby injuries, so I know that this will not be the last time that I use the TENS. My husband actually is eyeing it up for himself. I better keep an eye on it haha. One of my close girlfriends had an awful labor with a ton of back pain so I think I will be letting her use this for her December birth. I am curious to see how she likes it! If you are looking for drug-free pain options you may want to look into this handy little alternative to medicated pain relief. Browse the Midwifery Supplies Canada website today!

Thanks SO much to Jill for her expertise. I will definitely be sending any of my pregnant natural mama friends in your direction from now on!
