Really? Blood Type Influences Heart Disease RiskChildren's Health ...

From The New York Times?..

THE FACTS

Knowing your blood type is important if you need a blood transfusion. But can it also tell you something about your risk of heart disease?

Some researchers suspect that blood type can affect such risk factors as inflammation and levels of LDL, or bad, cholesterol. But the notion has been a matter of some debate, prompting many studies.

In 2006, a study of 2,000 coronary artery patients in The International Journal of Cardiology found no difference in the frequency of blood types in heart patients, compared with the general population.

But since then, much larger studies have shown the opposite. One study in Italy of 5,000 heart patients found that blood types A, B and AB were associated with greater rates of cardiac mortality, compared with people who were type O.

More recently, a team led by a Harvard researcher analyzed data from two long-running studies with nearly 90,000 people. Compared with people with type O blood, those with type AB were 23 percent more likely to develop heart disease. People who were type A had a 5 percent higher risk, and those with type B had a roughly 10 percent greater risk than those with type O.

Researchers caution that if blood type has any influence on heart disease risk, it is probably modest, and that unlike other risk factors, including diet and exercise, it is not something that can be controlled.

Michael Strahan: Rumored Kelly Ripa Co-Host!

Regis Philbin certainly left behind big shoes to fill, so it's appropriate that the rumored front-runner to replace him has some mighty large feet.

Former N.Y. Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will join Kelly Ripa as her co-host on Live! early next month, according to numerous reports.

The football star and TV personality, 40, has joined Ripa numerous times as guest host (see below, with Magic Mike's Channing Tatum this year):

Michael Strahan and Kelly Ripa

Kelly Ripa's co-host will be revealed on-air September 4.

Nick Lachey, Neil Patrick Harris and 57 other guest hosts have stepped since Regis bowed out last year; Seth Meyers was rumored to be in line for the full-time gig.

The rumor going around is that it will be Strahan, however, after he impressed Ripa and execs with his previous guest hosting duties in recent months.

Strahan played 15 NFL seasons, all with New York, setting the single-season sack record and retiring following the Giants' epic Super Bowl XLII victory.

What do you think? Live with Kelly and Michael?

Germany's Bundesbank still skeptical of bond buys

(AP) ? Germany's central bank, the Bundesbank, has again stressed its skepticism toward proposed purchases of government bonds by the European Central Bank, despite signs Chancellor Angela Merkel is open to the plans.

The German national central bank said in its monthly report Monday that it continues to "critically assess" such purchases and that they would carry "substantial risks."

ECB President Mario Draghi said on Aug. 2 that the bank might make such purchases to lower the high interest yields faced by some governments, if those countries first applied for help from the eurozone's bailout fund. He noted that the Bundesbank was the sole dissenter to the plan.

The Bundesbank has only one seat on the ECB's 23-member governing council, but has added clout because it enjoys considerable public support among economists, legislators and the general public in Germany. Merkel, however, has sounded more open to the idea ? she indicated during a trip to Canada last week that the ECB was in line with European governments in being willing to do everything possible to save the euro.

High borrowing costs on government bonds are threatening to ruin the finances of Spain and Italy, which are struggling to control their debts while their economies are in recession. If the borrowing costs stick at a high level ? many market-watchers put that at 7 percent ? a country would find it increasingly difficult to maintain its bond repayments and would have to turn to the other eurozone countries and the IMF for assistance. Because Italy's and Spain's economies are so large ? the third and fourth largest in the eurozone ? many analysts are worried that a request for a bailout would stretch the eurozone's finances to breaking point and plunge the region further into recession.

Bond purchases could drive down those costs, though an earlier, limited ECB bond purchase program failed to decisively lower them.

Spain's economy minister, Luis de Guindos, over the weekend said the ECB should make purchases without setting any limit.

The ECB said however in a statement that it was "wrong" to speculate on the shape of future ECB interventions. It said its policies remained independent of governments and that it would act "strictly" within its mandate, which stresses preserving price stability as the first priority.

Top ECB official Joerg Asmussen, a member of the bank's six-member executive board, said in an interview that the bank's mandate is to control inflation but also includes keeping the euro from breaking up.

"Only a currency whose continued existence is not in doubt can be considered stable," Asmussen was quoted as saying by the Frankfurter Rundschau.

Draghi has called the euro "irreversible" and has said it could act to bring down high bond yields, which investors have driven up on speculation that the euro could break up. Investors would demand more interest to loan to countries if they fear their money is at risk of being converted into a different currency that is worth less.

German news magazine der Spiegel reported that the ECB was contemplating setting concrete yield caps above which it would intervene to drive borrowing rates down. The ECB replied in its statement, issued Monday, that "it is absolutely misleading to report on decisions which have not yet been taken."

The Bundesbank's objections to bond purchases are based on a view that they come too close to bailing out government finances, which the ECB is forbidden to do by the European Union treaty. Such purchases also could mean other countries could share in any losses on those bonds ? a decision about the use of taxpayer money that belongs with governments, not the central bank.

To get the ECB to buy bonds, Spain would have to first apply for assistance to the eurozone's bailout fund, which could impose policy conditions such as reducing deficits or reforming the economy.

The ECB has not said how big the purchases would be or whether they would target a particular interest rate level. The bank's governing council next meets on Sept. 6.

Apple reported to be preparing direct sales in Russia, wanting more Macs for Moscow

Apple reported to be preparing direct sales in Russia, wanting more Macs for Moscow

Despite Russia's size, Apple has always had to sell in the country through carriers and resellers -- a pain for customers who might have to wait weeks beyond the initial launch of a device to see it in stores. If we're to believe tips from distributor insiders speaking with Kommersant, Apple wants at least some kind of first-party presence in the country. The company has supposedly set up a majority-owned local branch, Apple Rus, to run an operation that would start direct sales as soon as 2013. As for official retail stores, we simply don't know. Apple executives were reported as disappointed in available locations following a trip to Moscow in 2011, but there's been no chatter since. Apple certainly hasn't commented on the subject. We do know that iOS- and Mac-loving Russians in at least major cities will be happy if Apple establishes a more official presence, even if it still leaves us mourning the lost opportunity for an obvious Snow Leopard tie-in.

Microsoft accepts orders for upgrade to Windows 8

(AP) ? The window to upgrade to the next version of Microsoft's computer operating system is now open.

Microsoft Corp. began accepting orders for Windows 8 this week. The new operating system won't be delivered until Oct. 26, however.

People who own a personal computer running earlier versions of Windows can buy the revamped system for $14.99 to $39.99.

The lower price is being offered to PC owners who have bought a machine powered by Windows 7 since June 2. Everyone else with a Windows-based computer will have to pay the higher price if they want to upgrade.

The chance to upgrade at these prices expires Jan. 31.

Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can power both traditional PCs and tablet computers in response to the iPad's popularity.

Romney renews Obama welfare criticism in new ad

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is renewing his criticism of President Barack Obama's welfare policy, accusing him in a new ad of "gutting welfare reform." The ad says Romney would "put work back in welfare."

Romney says Obama lifted a provision that required people receiving welfare to work. Independent fact checkers have found the premise of the ad to be false.

Last month, Obama moved to allow states to seek waivers from some welfare rules. To get a waiver, states must show their plans would move at least 20 percent more people to work.

Conservatives say waivers will lead to an end of the work requirement. Romney was among several Republican governors who signed a letter in 2005 asking for more flexibility.

The Obama campaign, noting the work of fact-checking organizations, said Monday the ads are "not true." Campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said in fact the rule changes strengthen welfare's work requirement, not weaken it. "Just one week after pledging to run a substantive campaign, and whining about the negativity in this race, it's clear Mitt Romney has absolutely no intention of living up to that pledge," she said.

The Romney campaign did not say in which states the ad would run. The campaign says Romney will press the welfare issue during a town hall in New Hampshire Monday.
